A grieving mother in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, is sharing the painful story of how an ordinary school day turned into unimaginable tragedy for her family.
Lori Benoit wrote an emotional message on Facebook describing the events of February 9 and 10, when her 12-year-old daughter, Zoey Renee Anne Benoit, was killed in the má´€ss shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.
According to Lori, the evening of February 9 unfolded like any other. She, her husband, and their children went to bed expecting the next morning to follow their usual routine of work and school.
On February 10, Lori left for work as scheduled, while her husband completed his shift and returned home.
Their children headed to school excited to see friends and continue their classes. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary.
That sense of normalcy shattered later that day when an emergency alert reported a dangerous situation at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.
Lori learned that the incident was unfolding at the same school attended by her nephew, her son, and her oldest daughter, Zoey Renee Anne Benoit.
As families gathered outside and waited for information, fear and uncertainty spread throughout the small northern British Columbia community.
Lori said her nephew was the first to emerge safely from the school. Soon after, her son was escorted out by authorities, bringing immense relief.
But the wait for Zoey stretched on for hours.
Eventually, Lori received confirmation that Zoey Renee Anne Benoit was among the victims who lost their lives in the shooting.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) later confirmed multiple fatalities inside the school, as well as additional deaths connected to a residence linked to the suspect.
Authorities identified the alleged shooter as Jesse van Rootselaar, 18, who died from what police described as a self-inflicted gunsH๏τ wound. The investigation remains ongoing.
In her tribute, Lori described Zoey as bright, artistic, and full of life. Zoey loved creating art, spending time with her siblings, and singing around the house.
Her mother said Zoey had a naturally beautiful voice, even if she did not always recognize her own talent. Lori also shared that Zoey was fiercely protective of her younger siblings, always ready to defend her brother and sister.
While Lori’s youngest daughter, Skye, remained safe at her elementary school, the family now faces life without Zoey’s presence in their home.
The tragedy has deeply affected Tumbler Ridge, a close-knit town of fewer than 3,000 residents. Community members have held vigils and shared tributes honoring the young lives lost.
