In another major blow to American air operations in the Middle East, a U.S. military tanker aircraft has crashed in western Iraq while supporting intense bombing missions against Iran under Operation Epic Fury.
According to preliminary reports from U.S. Central Command, the large refueling plane — believed to be a KC-135 Stratotanker — went down during a critical mid-air refueling operation for strike aircraft returning from deep raids inside Iranian territory. Iraqi sources and local witnesses report a large explosion followed by debris scattered across a wide area. U.S. officials have not yet confirmed casualties, but search and rescue teams have been deployed.
The crash is suspected to have resulted from a mid-air collision, possibly with another aircraft or drone during high-tempo operations in congested airspace. However, Iranian-backed militias in Iraq have already claimed responsibility, suggesting the plane may have been brought down by ground fire or electronic interference.
This incident marks yet another serious loss for the U.S. aerial refueling fleet, which is the lifeline keeping long-range B-52 and B-1B strikes — many launched from UK bases — sustained over Iran. With the USS Gerald R. Ford still crippled by repeated fires and restricted flight operations in the Arabian Sea, America’s ability to maintain continuous pressure on Tehran is rapidly deteriorating.
The timing could not be worse. The U.S. has already burned through more than $11 billion in precision munitions in the opening phase of the campaign. Ten major radar systems across the region have been destroyed by Iranian strikes, Israeli airbases remain under relentless Hezbollah rocket attacks, and Iranian Almas-3 drone-missiles continue hunting IDF armor. Iran has also turned the Strait of Hormuz into a war zone, bombing an India-bound tanker and targeting multiple commercial vessels.
