Two children found alone at boat ramp after family fishing trip ends in tragedy at Hog Bayou

A father jumped into a South Texas waterway to save his child.

Texas Game Wardens recovered the bodies of a 28-year-old father and his 4-year-old son Wednesday after both drowned in Hog Bayou in Calhoun County when the father jumped in to save the child.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office notified game wardens that a family was overdue after a late-night fishing trip at Hog Bayou. The incident came to light earlier that morning when Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority maintenance crews arrived at the Hog Bayou boat ramp and found two unaccompanied children, ages 4 and 6, who told crews that their younger sibling had entered the water the night before. Their father immediately jumped in to rescue the boy, and neither resurfaced.

The man was identified Thursday as Kl Moo of Port Lavava.

Game wardens and the Texas Department of Public Safety launched a multi-agency search of the bayou and surrounding shoreline. DPS flew a fixed-wing aircraft equipped with thermal technology to ᴀssist the search, while the Texas General Land Office provided a drone to support land-based crews.

Around 1 p.m., DPS located and recovered the father. About an hour and a half later, game wardens located the child, who was then also recovered by DPS.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Division of Emergency Management, and Hunter Hadley’s Quest, Inc. also took part in the search effort. Texas Game Wardens acknowledged the support provided to the family during the ordeal.

“We appreciate the care GBRA provided to the children and the support TDEM and HHQ gave to family members,” game wardens said in a statement.

“HHQ will continue to ᴀssist the family and provide additional care and support in the days ahead.”

Texas Game Wardens closed their statement with condolences for those affected by the tragedy.

“Our thoughts remain with the victims’ loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
