At 58 years old, the former nurse has been fighting bowel cancer that spread to the peritoneal lining. She recently underwent life-saving HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy) and CRS (Cytoreductive Surgery), alongside a hernia repair. But the journey hasn’t been easy. Paula admitted that the first week of recovery was overwhelming—pain, exhaustion, and fear clouding every moment. There were times when she wondered if she could make it through.

But this fierce mother is no stranger to adversity. Having become a tireless campaigner for child cruelty sentencing since adopting Tony, Paula has always pushed through the hardest challenges. Despite the pain, she forced herself to stand and walk again and again. Those small, painful steps were her lifeline through the darkest days.

“I won’t sugar-coat it,” Paula shared in an emotional Instagram post, accompanied by a pH๏τo of herself in a black headscarf alongside Tony. “This is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but it’s also the thing that’s allowed me to go home after 12 days and be with my  family again.”

In the midst of the agony, Paula received some glimmer of hope. Earlier that day, she received test results revealing only a single nodule, with no signs of cancer in the organs and areas that were removed. Tears of relief flooded her eyes as she called it “the best news we could have hoped for.”

However, the battle is far from over. Paula and her family are now preparing for the next hurdle: lung nodules. A CT scan has been scheduled, and Paula is awaiting a follow-up with her oncologist. “If surgery isn’t an option, it’ll be back to chemotherapy,” she said, adding resolutely, “Either way, we keep going.”

Paula was first diagnosed with bowel cancer in February 2022, after years of being misdiagnosed with IBS and menopause symptoms. By the time the tumor was discovered, it had already spread through the bowel wall. While she initially received the good news of being cancer-free after surgery and chemotherapy, the cancer returned with a vengeance, spreading to her lungs and abdominal lining, and was classified as stage-four cancer.

In July of last year, Paula shared a devastating update, admitting that the diagnosis had hit her like a ton of bricks. But she vowed to fight the hardest battle of her life, a promise she has kept with unmatched determination.

Beyond her own battle, Paula has been a beacon of hope and a voice for the voiceless. Her relentless work led to the pᴀssing of “Tony’s Law,” a landmark legislation that increased prison sentences for those responsible for causing serious harm or death to children. Her advocacy efforts earned her an OBE in 2022, and she continues to be a tireless champion for children’s rights.

Paula also paid tribute to the medical team that treated her, saying their care and compᴀssion had given her the most precious gift: more time with the people she loves. The outpouring of support from friends, celebrities, and fans has been overwhelming, including messages from Zoe Ball, who sent her love and strength, and fashion designer Karen Millen, who offered prayers.

But the most heartbreaking part of her diagnosis is its effect on Tony. The young hero, who suffered catastrophic injuries at the hands of his birth parents, has flourished under Paula’s care. Yet, he is now worried about his mother, often telling his teacher, “I’m worried about Mummy.” Paula has kept the full extent of her illness a secret from him, as she doesn’t want to break his innocent belief that everyone survives. She hopes to protect that belief for as long as possible.

Tony, who learned to walk on prosthetic legs and has raised more than £1.8 million for children’s charities, continues to inspire the world. He received the Pride of Britain award and earned admiration from none other than the Prince and Princess of Wales. And now, in the face of Paula’s fight for life, Tony’s spirit shines through as a beacon of hope and resilience.

As Paula continues her battle, her strength, love, and unwavering commitment to her family serve as a testament to the power of a mother’s love. And for Tony, his mum’s fight is just another chapter in their shared journey of hope, courage, and survival.
