The Victim:
James “Jimmy” Gracey (or James Paul Gracey), 20 years old, a sophomore at the University of Alabama.
He’s from Elmhurst, Illinois (a suburb of Chicago).
He was visiting friends studying abroad in Barcelona, arriving only on Monday morning (March 17, 2026).
The circumstances of his disappearance:
He was last seen around 3:00 AM on Tuesday (March 18, 2026) outside the Shoko Club (Port Olímpic/Villa Olímpica beach, near the coast).
He separated from his group of friends and did not return to his Airbnb. His family only learned of his disappearance when Spanish police contacted them after finding Jimmy’s phone (which police recovered during an arrest).
The family (parents Taras & Therese Gracey, aunt Beth Marren O’Reilly) immediately launched a public appeal on March 18th: “It would be completely out of character for Jimmy not to be in contact.” They set up a H๏τline at 224-505-3886 (US) to receive tips, posted pH๏τos on Facebook, and pleaded with anyone who had seen him “even in the smallest detail” to report it immediately, even those who were “afraid because they were doing something they shouldn’t.”
Initial reaction & plea for help:
The family described it as: “This is something you think would never happen to your family… we just want to share pH๏τos and beg everyone to come forward.” Jimmy’s mother posted a prayer on Facebook; his aunt tearfully told the media: “We are living every minute.”
The Catalan police (Mossos d’Esquadra) and Guardia Urbana Barcelona deployed helicopters and coast guard to search along the coast. Initially, foul play was suspected, but there were no clear signs.

Jimmy’s body has been found in the water off the coast of Barcelona, very close to where he went missing (not far from Shoko).
