Suzanne Mericle faces charges of malice murder and two counts of felony murder in Georgia for the 2025 death of her boyfriend, James David Barron.
The murder trial of a St. Simons Island dentist began Wednesday in Hall County, Georgia, with opening statements.
Suzanne Mericle, 62, faces charges of malice murder, two counts of felony murder, aggravated ᴀssault, criminal damage to property in the first degree, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony and tampering with evidence.
She was arrested March 8, 2025 in connection to the murder of her boyfriend, 68-year-old James David Barron.
The Hall County Sheriff’s Office said Mericle and Barron lived together at a home in Gainesville, Ga.
The sheriff’s office said when deputies arrived at their home on the day of Barron’s murder, he was found sH๏τ in his torso and unresponsive in a bedroom.
Mericle was at the home, too, when deputies arrived, according to the incident report.
Hall County Fire Rescue then responded to the home and took Barron to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville where he was pronounced ᴅᴇᴀᴅ.
The sheriff’s office said Mericle was taken into custody at the Hall County Jail.
The sheriff’s office told First Coast News Mericle was arrested three weeks before Barron’s murder on Feb. 16, 2025. She was charged with DUI, obstruction of an officer and unsafe operation of a vehicle.
Mericle is the owner of Mericle Dentistry on St. Simons Island, which is now listed as “permanently closed” in online search results.
The March 18 trial date was set in November 2025, with a pretrial hearing ᴅᴇᴀᴅline of February 18, 2026.

Opening Statements
The Hall County ᴀssistant District Attorney started their opening statements on behalf of the State of Georgia by painting a picture of Mericle and Barron’s relationship. Prosecutors said the couple began dating in the Spring of 2024 and bought a house together on Lake Lanier, Georgia, in October 2024. The goal was for Mericle to retire in the near future and live with Barron full time at the lake; however, prosecutors said Mericle became ‘unhinged.’
Prosecutors argued Mericle discovered Barron had been sending money to a woman from Moldova which created tension and fighting. The prosecution detailed at least four instances of fighting, including the night Mericle was arrested for a DUI just a few weeks before the shooting.
“She couldn’t let it go. She was constantly confronting David about it and they were constantly fighting about it,” the Hall County District Attorney said.
Prosecutors claimed the couple got into a fight the night of the shooting and Barron retreated to a bedroom upstairs where he closed the door and locked it. According to the prosecution, Mericle got her gun and fired it into the door. A bullet went through the door, hit Barron in the left arm, and traveled out of his arm into his chest.
“The defendant is on the other side of the door, she hears David make a noise, sort of like a grunt as it hits him. It hits him and he falls forward on his face,” the Hall County District Attorney said.
Prosecutors said Mericle found a hammer and began making holes in the door in order to unlock it. From there, she found Barron’s personal gun and sH๏τ it out the open door at least twice before placing it by his hand on the ground and calling 911. They also said Mericle tried flushing the shell casings down the toilet.
The defense painted a different picture during their opening statements.
The defense claimed Mericle fell in love with Barron and often called him her ‘knight in shining armor.’ The defense said their relationship moved fast and after a few months of dating, they bought the $1.59 million house on Lake Lanier; however, the defense said the couple’s relationship changed once they bought the house.

“This was someone who had opinions about what she wore, what she was to eat, what she was to do with the money from the sale of her dental practice. This was someone who put his hands on her over and over again,” Brett Willis, Mericle’s attorney said.
Willis said Barron become controlling and violent. Mericle then found out about the woman from Moldova who Barron was paying to get a green card and paying for her apartment in New Jersey.
On the night of the shooting, the defense said Barron had fallen asleep in front of the TV, but when he woke up, he saw something on Mericle’s phone that ‘she forgot to delete.’ The defense said Barron became enraged, choked Mericle, and slammed her against the wall. He took his gun, car keys, and her phone upstairs.
The defense said Mericle wanted to leave, but knew she needed to get her phone back. She tried knocking on the door of the bedroom, but Barron would not answer. The defense said she sH๏τ at the door handle to get the door open.
“She gets her gun, she goes up those stairs and she even gives him a chance, ’give me my phone, I’m leaving, give me my phone.’ Nothing. ‘David I’m going to shoot this lock off the door, I’m going to shoot this lock.’ Nothing. And with her hands shaking, every part of her body vibrating, her inability to breathe with these deep gasps, she does fire at that lock,” Willis explained.
Willis said Mericle was distraught and attempted to kill herself twice with Barron’s gun. He argued the jury will see Mericle is ‘justified’ in using force.
First witnesses

Following opening statements, prosecutors called two Hall County Sheriff’s Deputies to the witness stand. They were first on the scene the night of the shooting.
Prosecutors went through their body camera video from that night. One deputy could be seen going inside the home and finding Barron on the ground in the upstairs bedroom.
The other deputy stayed outside with Mericle who was visibly distraught.
“I think he’s ᴅᴇᴀᴅ,” Mericle said on the body camera video.
EMS could be seen arriving on scene in the video and after some time, Mericle was able to describe what led up to the shooting. She told deputies they had gotten into a huge fight and he threatened her with his gun.
“He grabbed me by the throat and said he would ruin me with my children….he said he would shove that gun down my throat,” Mericle said.
Mericle also told deputies Barron sH๏τ at her while walking up the stairs. He then locked himself in the bedroom. Mericle said she tried to get him to open the door, but when he would not open it, she sH๏τ at the door to get in.
“I tried to shoot the doorknob off and I must have hit him,” Mericle said.
