According to the mother and Baldwin County police report:

Hernandez-Lopez was heavily intoxicated and under the influence of drugs. He had a violent argument with his wife and then strangled her.
He threatened to kill everyone in the house.
The mother tried to keep her husband out the door, secretly giving her son the phone to call 911 and trying to calm him down while waiting for the police.
She told her son to stay inside, but when Hernandez-Lopez slammed against the wall, the boy, worried about his mother, ran outside.
Herner-Lopez lunged at his son, swinging his arms and throwing a bicycle at him.

The boy dodged the blows, wrestled the suspect to the ground, and punched him repeatedly in the face until he was unconscious. He held the suspect down with the bicycle until the police arrived.
Neither mother nor son were seriously injured (only a few bruises).
