Iran has accused the United States of spreading “fake news” after U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright deleted a social media post claiming that the U.S. Navy had escorted an oil tanker through the Strait of Hormuz to ensure oil shipments continued flowing to global markets.

The White House later clarified that no U.S. Navy escort had taken place, contradicting the earlier statement. The post was removed shortly afterward, triggering confusion and strong reactions from Tehran.

Iran’s foreign minister said U.S. officials were “posting fake news to manipulate markets,” arguing that the misleading claim could influence global oil prices and create instability during the already tense regional conflict.

The incident comes as tensions continue to rise around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, where military warnings, naval deployments, and fears of disruptions to global energy supplies have intensified amid the ongoing U.S.–Iran confrontation.x
