Andrew Garfield’s New Psychological Thriller Officially Ends His Rotten Tomatoes Streak

Andrew Garfield‘s new psychological thriller has now ended his incredible Rotten Tomatoes streak. The two-time Oscar nominee has been busy in the last few years, appearing in a wide range of movies from his return as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home to his acclaimed role as Jonathan Larson in Tick, Tick… Boom!

Recently, Garfield starred in the new thriller After the Hunt, which just received its wide release. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, the movie follows a professor, Alma (Julia Roberts), who gets caught up in the middle of a crisis involving her star student Maggie (Ayo Edebiri) and colleague Hank (Garfield). As she gets to the bottom of the situation, there is the threat that her dark secrets from her past may unravel.

However, since the movie’s premiere at Venice in August, it has been met with poor to mixed reviews. Currently, After the Hunt holds a 39% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 163 reviews. Additionally, since general audiences have now seen the movie, the Popcornmeter has been equally poor with a 34% score. The thriller also received a C- on CinemaScore.

As a result of these scores, Garfield’s own Rotten Tomatoes streak for designated “Fresh” movies has now ended, given that After the Hunt has been given a “Rotten” for both the critical and audience scores. Up until this point, the actor had a positive Rotten Tomatoes streak, where both the Tomatometer and Popcornmeter were fresh. This included The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Tick, Tick… Boom!, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and We Live in Time.

Most reviews for After the Hunt noted that the thriller suffers from a contrived story, where even the sociopolitical themes are not coherently depicted. Even the philosophical aspects, such as #MeToo, elite privilege, and generational differences, feel lost in its direction. However, ScreenRant‘s Jack Walters thought it was an “engaging story,” especially signaling out Roberts as the standout: “Julia Roberts is undeniably the star of the show.”

While speaking with RadioTimes.com, Garfield spoke about the movie’s divisiveness. He finds that the “subjective response” is “quite expanding and liberating” since “that becomes the story, in a way, and that becomes maybe more – I don’t know – growthful or invigorating or challenging.

Despite this hiccup, Garfield already has several projects lined up. After starring in Breathe, he is reuniting with Claire Foy in the upcoming British movie, The Magic Faraway Tree, based on the same book by Enid Blyton. In addition, the actor will reunite with Guadagnino in the biographical comedy, Artifical, in which he will play the lead role of Open AI CEO Sam Altman.

After the Hunt is now playing in theaters.
