Good Fortune Continues Keanu Reeves’ Impressive Streak Of “Fresh” Movies

Keanu Reeves’ new film, Good Fortune, is now playing in movie theaters. While the movie’s box office will be a big factor in determining whether it is a success for first-time writer/director Aziz Ansari and studio Lionsgate, Good Fortune‘s Rotten Tomatoes score has already guaranteed a notable milestone for Reeves.

Good Fortune, which sees Reeves star as an inept guardian angel who meddles in the lives of Ansari’s gig worker and a venture capitalist played by Seth Rogen, has earned a 77% “Fresh” score on RT as of writing. Whether the film officially ends up being “Certified Fresh” or not, it’s “Fresh” status is pretty much cemented. With that being the case, Good Fortune continues Reeves’ streak of “Fresh” movies that reaches back to January 2019.

Yes, Keanu Reeves has not starred in a movie that has received a “Rotten” score on the popular review aggregator site in the last six years. And it’s not like Reeves has only starred in a handful of movies over that period. His current streak encompᴀsses 12 movies, including action movies, family-friendly fare, and original comedies.

Keanu Reeves 12-Straight “Fresh” Movies Is An Incredibly Impressive Run

The first four of Reeve’s last dozen “Fresh” movies all came in 2019. That year saw the release of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum; the Netflix romantic comedy Always Be My Maybe, where Reeves played a version of himself; Toy Story 4, voicing the character of Duke Caboom; and once again playing a comedic version of himself in Between Two Ferns: The Movie.

Most of Reeves’ next batch of movies saw him reprise classic characters in new sequels, including as Ted in Bill & Ted Face the Music, as Neo in The Matrix Resurrections, and again as John Wick in both John Wick: Chapter 4 and the franchise spinoff Ballerina.

He has also had good luck with films targeted at family audiences, having appeared in The SpongeBod Movie: Sponge on the Run, DC League of Super-Pets, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Reeves’ streak is impressive not just for its longevity but for the amount of work that he has done in that time frame. Other actors may have gone longer without a “Rotten” movie, but few have worked as frequently. One example, Tom Cruise. His last “Rotten” movie was 2017’s The Mummy, but since then, Cruise has starred in just five movies compared to Reeves’ dozen.

What Was Keanu Reeves’ Last “Rotten” Movie?

The last movie that Keanu Reeves starred in that earned a “Rotten” designation is the 2018 sci-fi thriller Replicas, where Reeves plays a scientist who attempts to clone his family after they died in a car accident. Replicas ended up with a 9% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and didn’t fare much better at the box office, making just $9.33 million worldwide.

As good as Reeves has been since Replicas, it was part of a string of “Rotten” movies. After John Wick: Chapter 2 was “Fresh” in 2017, he also had A Happening of Monumental Proportions (20%) that year. Then in 2018, along with Replicas, Reeves starred in the romantic comedy Destination Wedding (51%) and the crime drama Siberia (12%).

While there are plenty of other classics on Reeves’ resume, the “Fresh” movies were more spread out prior to 2019. In fact, Reeves had longer bad stretches than anything, including two instances where five of his movies in a row earned “Rotten” ratings.

Be it luck, being better at choosing projects, or perhaps his own guardian angel, Keanu Reeves is on an unprecedented run not just in his career, but for most actors in Hollywood. It’ll be fun to see how long he can keep it up.
