Disney Launches Twisted New Version Of Beauty And The Beast Tonight

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast continues to capture the imaginations of audiences everywhere, even as interpretations of the “tale as old as time” shift. Disney itself has offered some new takes on the story, namely the mᴀssive live-action adaptation starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens that arrived in 2017 and grossed $1.26 billion at the worldwide box office.

However, on a different note, Disney has partnered with Webtoon to launch Disney As Old As Time: A Twisted Tale, as part of the newest series of Disney Webtoons. This reimagining of the milestone Disney film, written by Beatrice Bᴀssoli and Francesca Siviero with art done by Chiara Bracale and Rossella Gentile, launches on the Webtoon platform on Friday, October 17 at 8 p.m. ET.

Collider revealed an exclusive first look at some art from As Old As Time, as well as sharing the synopsis, which is as follows:

Clever and imaginative, Belle longs to escape her provincial town to find adventure. Only, Belle’s father won’t leave. He’s waiting for her mother to return— a mother Belle can’t remember. But when Belle’s father is taken prisoner by a terrifying Beast, she offers to take his place to save his life. Belle finds the Beast’s enchanted rose, and when she touches it, images flood her mind with memories of the mother she believed she would never see again. Stranger still, she sees that her mother is none other than the Enchantress who cursed the castle and all its inhabitants. Shocked and confused, Belle and the Beast must work together to unravel a dark mystery about their families. As Old as Time is the first book in a series of manga adaptations of the bestselling Twisted Tales novel series, which reimagines classic Disney stories in a surprising new way.

Much of the modern discussion surrounding Beauty and the Beast has revolved around the portrayal of Belle’s arguably problematic relationship with the Beast, and how both he and the villain Gaston treat her. However, this Webtoon is set up to explore more of Belle’s family’s past, something which is also a prominent element in the 2017 live-action remake.

Paige O’Hara, the voice of Belle in the original animated movie, also commented in a recent interview with PEOPLE on how she, too, looks at Beauty and the Beast differently nowadays:There are things that she [Belle] did that I appreciate more now that I’m an older woman. Like, sacrificing her life for her father without hesitation. […] She was ahead of her time, she was an old soul […].

While both As Old As Time‘s synopsis and O’Hara’s comments focus on Belle taking responsibility for her parents’ actions, Disney previously published another little-known backstory that takes a different approach. The Beast Within: A Tale of Beauty’s Prince, by Serena Valentino and published by Disney Book Group, focuses on the prince/Beast’s journey to understanding true love.

This installment, from Disney’s line of villain backstory novels, is different from Liz Braswell’s As Old as Time, which is the basis for the webtoon of the same name. The Twisted Tales series was published by Disney-Hyperion and also includes installments reimagining The Little Mermaid, Frozen, Peter Pan, and more, revolving around one “What if?” scenario.

Beauty and the Beast still holds a lofty place in the cultural zeitgeist for its resonant story, beautiful style, landmark soundtrack, and becoming the first ever animated movie to be nominated at the Academy Awards for Best Picture. The aspects of it that don’t sit as well with today’s audience only drive people’s desire to understand it, leading to interesting spinoffs like this one.
