Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman are bringing their chaotic, combustible marriage comedy The Roses to viewers’ homes, as their 2025 comedy has announced its digital release date.
According to Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, starting Tuesday, October 21, audiences can buy or rent The Roses through video on-demand platforms, including Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and more. In addition to the movie, the digital release also contains a blooper reel and a number of behind-the-scenes features.
The Roses stars Cumberbatch and Colman as Theo and Ivy Rose, whose seemingly successful marriage cracks under the weight of resentment that builds as circumstances dramatically change the couple’s dynamic. The film, directed by Jay Roach and written by Tony McNamara, is a reimagining of 1989’s The War of the Roses, which in turn was based on a Warren Adler novel.
In addition to Cumberbatch and Colman, the ensemble cast of The Roses includes Kate McKinnon, Andy Samberg, Ncuti Gatwa, Sunita Mani, Zoë Chao, Jamie Demetriou, Delaney Quinn, Hala Finley, Ollie Robinson, Wells Rappaport, and Allison Janney.
Released in theaters August 29, The Roses received a “Fresh” Rotten Tomatoes score of 65% and a solid audience score of 79%; read ScreenRant‘s The Roses review for our take. The film had a disappointing box office run, however, making $50.5 million worldwide. Both results trailed 1989’s The War of the Roses, which starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.
The War of the Roses is available to buy or rent via video on-demand platforms
What we don’t yet have is The Roses‘ streaming premiere date, though the expectation is that the film will stream on Hulu and/or Disney+. Though, for fans of physical media, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment also announced that The Roses Blu-Ray and DVD is going to be released on November 25.
The Blu-Ray/DVD also features the same bonus materials as the digital release. Specifically, a feature on the Roses’ house, a focal point of the film; interviews with cast and filmmakers about the ensemble’s connection and chemistry; and the combination of Roach, director of the Austin Powers franchise and Meet the Parents, and McNamara, writer for The Great and The Favourite.
Fans of Cumberbatch and Colman wondering about their next projects, Cumberbatch has one more film releasing in 2025, The Thing with Feathers, premiering in US movie theaters on November 28. Colman, meanwhile, has a few high profile TV series she is set to star in, including The Night Manager Season 2, Netflix’s Pride and Prejudice, and FX’s Cry Wolf.
