The sequel to A Minecraft Movie now has a release date. The original movie, which adapts the popular video game of the same name, debuted on April 4 and is currently the third highest-grossing movie of 2025 worldwide. The upcoming A Minecraft Movie 2 was announced to be in early development on April 11, though no further news arrived for some time.

The official X account for A Minecraft Movie has confirmed that the sequel will debut in theaters on July 23, 2027. Their post, which includes a reference to the video game by describing the work on the sequel as “building terrain,” also features a teaser poster showcasing two Minecraft-style pickaxes. If it holds true, this release date means that the sequel will arrive just two years and three months after the debut of 2025’s A Minecraft Movie. This is a relatively quick turnaround for a modern franchise-starting blockbuster.

For instance, while the sequel to 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog only took two years and two months to come to the screen, the sequel to 2021’s Dune took two years and five months.

Meanwhile, the sequel to 2022’s The Batman is set to premiere more than five years later, while the sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie is slated to debut three years after the original smash hit.

At the time of writing, plot details about the project remain unknown. However, ᴅᴇᴀᴅline confirms that director Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre) is set to return to helm the project, in addition to co-writing the screenplay with Chris Galletta.

It is also unknown if any of the original cast of A Minecraft Movie will return. The star-studded ensemble of the original smash hit included Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Rachel House, Matt Berry, Jemaine Clement, Sebastian Hansen, Emma Myers, and Jennifer Coolidge.

Regardless, this release date gives the Warner Bros. тιтle pride of place in the middle of the 2027 summer movie season. This move away from a springtime release makes perfect sense in the wake of the 2025 movie grossing a whopping $957.8 million against its reported $150 million budget.

However, if the current schedule holds, the sequel will be going up against a number of IP juggernauts in July. In fact, July 23 is also the promised release date for The Simpsons Movie 2.

This date also comes just a few weeks after the July 9 debut of Man of Tomorrow, which is James Gunn sequel to 2025’s Superman.

Regardless of this compeтιтion, the sequel to A Minecraft Movie seems set up for success given its quick turnaround time and the overwhelming commercial reception of the original movie, which went viral off the back of its cavalcade of references to the popular game.
