A sequel to The Curse of La Llorona is in the works more than half a decade later. The 2019 horror movie, which centers on the тιтular spirit of Hispanic American folklore, is part of the extended Conjuring Universe. It even features a brief appearance from the Annabelle doll, though it is not considered an official installment in the franchise.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, a sequel тιтled The Revenge of La Llorona is now in production in Buffalo, New York. Producers Emile Gladstone, Gary Dauberman, and James Wan have returned for the project, which was written by Sean Tretta (Mayans M.C.) and is being directed by Santiago Menghini (No One Gets Out Alive).
The duo is stepping in for original screenwriters Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis (Nightbooks) and original director Michael Chaves (who has since gone on to helm multiple installments in the Conjuring Universe proper, namely The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, The Nun II, and 2025’s The Conjuring: Last Rites).
The belated sequel goes into production after multiple attempts to craft a follow-up to The Curse of La Llorona fell through. However, the 2019 movie was a hit that grossed $123.2 million against a reported budget of just $9 million. While it remains the lowest-grossing Conjuring movie, its return on investment was rock solid, so mounting a sequel still makes sense.
The lowest-grossing installment in the official Conjuring Universe is 2021’s The Devil Made Me Do It, which debuted on HBO Max on the same day as its theatrical premiere and grossed $206.4 million worldwide.
The Revenge of La Llorona will follow a family with serious issues and long-buried secrets that sees those issues compounded when they are set upon by La Llorona, a situation which forces them to reconnect with their estranged grandfather, who is a curandero.
Menghini is overseeing a cast that includes Hostel‘s Jay Hernandez, Chicago Fire‘s Monica Raymund, Betty in NY‘s Martín Fajardo, Devious Maids‘ Edy Ganem, Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado‘s Acston Luca Porto, and Bob Hearts Abishola‘s Avie Porto.
Additionally, Raymond Cruz is reprising his original role as ex-priest Rafael Olvera, who helped single mother Anna Tate-Garcia (Linda Cardellini) protect her children from the vengeful Llorona.
At the time of writing, no other members of the original cast have been confirmed to return, including Cardellini, Roman Christou (Chris Garcia), Jaynee-Lynne Kinchen (Samantha Garcia), Tony Amendola (Father Perez), and Marisol Ramirez (La Llorona).
It remains to be seen if the sequel to The Curse of La Llorona contains more robust connections to the other Conjuring movies. Regardless, it’s the first film connected to the franchise to go into production after the premiere of Last Rites, which was billed as the final installment featuring central characters Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga).
