After sending other long-awaited live-action legacy sequels to streaming — Hocus Pocus 2, Disenchanted — Disney finally turned its eye back to theaters this year with the release of Freakier Friday. Arriving 22 years after its predecessor, the Nisha Ganatra-directed sequel reunited Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis for another high-energy body-swap adventure.
This time around, though, there’s double the excitement thanks to new characters played by Julia ʙuттers and Sophia Hammons. Mere days before Anna (Lohan) is set to get married, the franchise’s typical brand of familial conflict leads to her swapping bodies with her teenage daughter (ʙuттers), while Anna’s future step-daughter (Hammons) switches with Tess (Curtis). Cue the panicked screaming.
Freakier Friday was first released in theaters on August 8, and it has been exclusively available on the big screen since then. Now, though, just about two months later, it has officially come home.
Freakier Friday Is Now Available On VOD
While its Disney+ release is still to come, Freakier Friday is available on digital as of today, October 7. This means viewers can either rent or purchase the film on various platforms, such as YouTube, Apple TV, Fandango At Home, and Amazon. It will be available on Blu-ray on November 11, with its Disney+ debut likely to hit closer to the holidays.
Thanks to generally positive reviews and a solid two months of theatrical exclusivity, Freakier Friday had a modestly successful run. Though it fell short of $100 million domestically — only earning $94 million — it legged its way out to $152.7 million worldwide. When considering its reported $42-$45 million budget, all signs point to Freakier Friday pulling in a profit.
If you missed it in theaters, now is the perfect time to watch Freakier Friday. Truthfully, there probably isn’t a bad time to catch it, since its hilarious story of two generations swapping places is often appealing. Still, for anyone who grew up with the original that might be wary of a sequel, it’s worth checking out; doubly so for anyone who needs a laugh these days.
It’s a delight seeing Curtis and Lohan back together onscreen since they bring out each other’s charm and infectious energy. Freakier Friday is an especially special moment for Lohan in particular, as it marked her first theatrical movie in over a decade. Though watching it at home isn’t quite the same as catching it on the big screen, it’s still worth it to see a huge return to form for the fan-favorite star.
The film also features the returns of several other cast members from the 2003 original, including Chad Michael Murray, Rosalind Chao, and Mark Harmon. As fall gets properly underway and families start to come together for the holidays, Freakier Friday might be just what audiences are looking for.
