The stars of Gilmore Girls have started discussing what’s next for the franchise, including ideas for a movie.
It’s been 25 years since the release of Gilmore Girls. The comedy-drama series follows a mother, Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham), and daughter, Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel), as their inseparable bond is tested. The show is set in a quaint little town called Stars Hollow, filled with an array of quirky characters who help the Gilmore girls get through life.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lauren Graham, Kelly Bishop, and Scott Patterson reveal they’re open to keeping their Gilmore Girls’ characters alive.
Graham doubled down on her enthusiasm by saying, “I’m always open to [returning and reprising Lorelai]. There’s no reason why I wouldn’t be. Of course, you always want to give people what they want and also make sure you’re honoring the legacy and not doing anything to mess it up.”
She then revealed a potential way for the cast of Gilmore Girls to return to Stars Hollow once again:
“I’ve always said a Christmas movie seems like a way to revisit the characters. That wouldn’t have to be a full series, and I think it would make sense for dressing up the town and having a holiday-themed gathering. So that’s what I’ve been saying, but I’m not in charge.”
What A Gilmore Girls Movie Could Mean For Rory
Gilmore Girls was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, who is best known for her work on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The series ran from 2000 to 2007 with seven seasons and became a smash hit with an even bigger audience reach thanks to streaming.
The last time fans got a glimpse of Gilmore Girls was Netflix’s revival, A Year in the Life (2016), which featured four episodes that were more like movies and were set across the seasons of the year. The revival ended on a cliffhanger with Rory confessing to her mom that she was pregnant.
Bishop, who played Lorelai’s mom, Emily Gilmore, also stated her approval of returning to Stars Hollow.
“I would be open to it, but it would require the main players there again: Lauren, Alexis, and certainly Amy. I’m also wondering if it would be better as a movie, rather than trying to do four more episodes or something like that,” she stated, leaving fans desperate for their plans to be made into fruition.
With a big cliffhanger leaving the story open-ended and the resurgence of appreciation for the early 2000s show, it’s no surprise that the cast and fans alike are desperate for more. Creator Sherman-Palladino confirmed the cliffhanger was intentional because “the story was about history repeating itself and about mothers and daughters.”
The show received critical acclaim, including an Emmy win and an additional 23 awards and 85 nominations for awards such as the Golden Globes. It’s been nearly a decade since the revival of Gilmore Girls, and fans aren’t ready to say goodbye.
