$79M Historical Movie Based On Emmy-Winning Series Becomes Instant Streaming Hit

Emmy-winning series Downton Abbey’s latest movie has become a streaming success. Directed by Simon Curtis, the film is set in the summer of 1930 and follows the Crawley family as they struggle to avoid social disgrace and financial ruin. At the center of the turmoil is Lady Mary Talbot (Michelle Dockery), whose public scandal threatens to upend the family’s already delicate reputation.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is officially second in the iTunes Movie Rentals Chart. It has also received incredible reviews with a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 92%. The budget for production was $50 million, and it has now grossed $79 million worldwide.

Downton Abbey is a British historical television drama created by Julian Fellowes that follows the lives of the aristocratic family, the Crawleys, and those who work for them at the Yorkshire country estate. The series ran from 2010 to 2015 and had worldwide success. The latest movie is not the only Downton Abbey project that’s received positive reviews, as each of the films has reached over 80% on Rotten Tomatoes.

After releasing six seasons and three movies, it’s expected by many that this is the last adventure fans will take with the Crawleys. This is especially true given the film’s тιтle, The Grand Finale.

Downton Abbey May Finally Have Its Conclusion

The new film picks up exactly two years after the second movie, A New Era, and follows Lady Mary Talbot as she goes through the scandal of divorce. With the death of Dame Maggie Smith, the heart and soul of what made Downton Abbey great, Violet Crawley, is no longer there, and the story of the family has moved in a different direction while honoring what came before.

When a series is performing well, many creators and producers want to continue basking in its success. Smith’s death marked the loss of one of the show’s most beloved characters, and the new film pays homage to her legacy through flashbacks and heartfelt moments that honor the Dowager Countess’s sharp wit and enduring influence.

As each member of the Crawley family reaches their own resolution, The Grand Finale provides a sense of closure that many fans have been waiting for. Though Downton Abbey has defied conclusions before, this latest chapter seems to offer the definitive farewell to one of television’s most enduring worlds.
