Shudder’s Viral Horror Movie Instantly Lands On All-Time Box Office Chart

Good Boy has swiftly landed on a major box office chart. The movie, which is a Shudder original in the United States and is being distributed in domestic theaters in collaboration with IFC, was directed and co-written by Ben Leonberg and stars his own pet, Indy, as a dog whose owner is being menaced by sinister supernatural forces.

Ahead of its October 3 debut, it became a viral sensation, largely off the back of widespread concerns about whether Indy survives the ending of Good Boy. In fact, Google searches asking if the dog dies in the movie spiked by 2000% in the immediate wake of the release of its trailer.

Now, per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Good Boy is projected to conclude its opening weekend with a 3-day domestic total of $2.25 million from 1,650 theaters.

This is a relatively small number compared to the weekend’s wide releases. Good Boy is debuting at No. 9 behind тιтles including Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl (No. 1 with $30-$32 million in 3,702 theaters), The Smashing Machine (No. 3 with $6.2 million in 3,345 theaters), and One Battle After Another (No. 2 with $12.3 million in 3,634 theaters).

However, IFC’s Shudder movies are primarily limited releases, so they operate on their own scale. By that metric, Good Boy has just achieved a major record among other тιтles put out in theaters by the horror streaming service.

In the matter of a single weekend, the 2025 horror movie has already risen to become the third highest-grossing Shudder/IFC movie in history at the domestic box office, behind only the experimental slasher In a Violent Nature and the found footage darling Late Night with the Devil.

Below, see a breakdown of Shudder/IFC’s Top 5 highest-grossing domestic movies:

#

тιтle

Domestic Box Office

#1

Late Night with the Devil (2023)

$10 million

#2

In a Violent Nature (2024)

$4.2 million

#3

Good Boy (2023)

$2.25 million (and counting)

#4

Oddity (2024)

$1.2 million

#5

When Evil Lurks (2023)

$546,626

Good Boy‘s success in the span of just three days is even more remarkable considering the fact that it has already grossed more than four times the domestic haul of When Evil Lurks, which is just two spots down on the Top 5 chart.

It remains to be seen if Good Boy can climb any higher. However, if it can keep up its current trajectory, it could easily rise to No. 2 on the all-time chart, as its opening weekend gross sees it landing in between the 3-day domestic debuts of In a Violent Nature ($2.15 million) and Late Night with the Devil ($2.83 million).

The movie’s viral buzziness has likely helped it achieve this impressive result, but it has also proven to be a critical darling on top of that. Good Boy reviews have helped to spread interest by earning the movie a near-perfect, Certified Fresh, score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.
