Mark Wahlberg’s Reboot Of A 12-Year-Old Jason Statham Action Movie Is Now Streaming

Mark Wahlberg and Jason Statham have been bankable action movie stars for the last few decades now. After starring together in 2003’s remake of The Italian Job, the two have since gone their separate ways, never working together again as the car heist film failed to launch a franchise.

Statham is the more accomplished action star of the two, but not every one he’s done has worked. This includes 2013’s Parker, which faltered in theaters (making only $46 million worldwide) and was disliked by critics (earning a 41% Rotten Tomatoes score).

The movie had franchise aspirations, and while Statham couldn’t achieve that goal, his former The Italian Job co-star now has his sH๏τ. Wahlberg plays career criminal Parker in the new action film Play Dirty, making it a reboot of the property — based on Donald E. Westlake’s Parker novel series — that Statham last headlined.

Play Dirty Is Streaming On Prime Video: Should You Watch It?

Amazon released Play Dirty exclusively on Prime Video on October 1, making it instantly available at home for its millions of subscribers rather than attempting a theatrical launch. It’s directed by Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3) and follows Parker as he leads a heist to steal a great treasure tied to the legendary Lady of Arintero.

Wahlberg headlines Play Dirty‘s cast, and viewers could be split on whether he’s fit for the role. Those who are familiar with Westlake’s novel may view him as a departure from the character on the page. His action skills aren’t quite on the same level of Statham’s, as this version of Parker is more often a shooter rather than a fighter.

Any fan of Wahlberg should still check out the movie to judge his performance for themselves, but anyone who likes LaKeith Stanfield will be pleased here. He steals the show in a supporting role as Grofield. The movie might also work for fans of Monk thanks to Tony Shalhoub’s performance.

The bigger selling point here may ultimately be Black’s involvement as the writer and director. He infuses the movie with his usual sense of humor and fast-paced action. There’s even the Christmas setting that is a hallmark of many of his films. Shane Black’s best movies are beloved, giving this action thriller a chance to connect more broadly.

Wahlberg and Black’s names could help get people to press play on Play Dirty, but the action comedy tone and heist story also add appeal. If you love the Ocean’s movies, Snatch, Baby Driver, and other all-time great heist movies, there is some fun to be had as the twists and turns of this plot unfold in Play Dirty‘s ending.

Play Dirty‘s critical response has been mixed so far, illustrating how it might not work for everyone. It currently sits at 53% on Rotten Tomatoes with critics; the audience score is not yet available. Personally, I found moments of enjoyment with the film, namely Stanfield, the humor, and the action, even though I admittedly wish it were better.

With the movie’s ease of access on Prime Video, its very easy to queue up the film and check it out for yourself. Play Dirty should be considered a must-watch for fans of Wahlberg, Stanfield, and Black, and it works well enough as a heist story that those interested in that genre can get a familiar but new entry in the genre.
