Shudder’s New Halloween Movie Debuts With Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score

V/H/S/Halloween has debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with an astounding score. The new movie is the eighth installment in the found footage anthology franchise, which kicked off in 2012 and also includes the spinoffs Siren (2016) and Kids vs. Aliens (2022). The most recent installment in the flagship franchise was 2024’s V/H/S/Beyond.

V/H/S/Halloween features five segments and a wraparound narrative that are all set during the тιтular holiday. The filmmakers behind these horror stories are music video director Bryan M. Ferguson, Anna Zlokovic (Appendage), Paco Plaza ([REC]), Casper Kelly (Adult Swim Yule Log), Alex Ross Perry (Her Smell), and the duo Micheline Pitt-Norman and R.H. Norman (Cosmetic).

Rotten Tomatoes has now aggregated enough critics’ reviews for the new horror movie to earn an official score on the Tomatometer ahead of its Shudder debut on October 3. While the score could fluctuate as more reviews are added, thanks to 18 different critics, V/H/S/Halloween has earned a perfect 100% score at the time of writing.

While some critics’ individual scores are mixed-positive (it has earned four 3 out of 5 scores), a number of them had positively glowing reactions. V/H/S/Halloween has earned scores of 4 out of 5, 8.5 out of 10, and a perfect 5 out of 5 (from Daily ᴅᴇᴀᴅ‘s Emily von Seele, who called it “another win for the series“).

What This Means For V/H/S/Halloween

Not only is this perfect 100% score impressive in and of itself, it makes Halloween the highest-rated of the V/H/S movies. While six of the nine previous installments (including the spinoff тιтles) have earned Fresh scores on the platform, the highest that any previous entry has reached is 90%, a score that both 94 and Beyond earned.

Below, see a breakdown of how the new installment compares to every movie in the franchise:

If it manages to retain this perfect score when more reviews are added, Halloween could become the fourth movie from the V/H/S franchise to become Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes after 94, 99, and Beyond. This cements the 2020s as the strongest period yet for the flagship branch of the horror franchise.

It ultimately remains to be seen if V/H/S/Halloween will engender the same level of enthusiasm among audiences as it has with critics. So far, the Popcornmeter score of every installment has been lower than its Tomatometer score. However, the new movie has started so strong that it could potentially break a record with audiences as well.
