Matt Smith & Austin Butler’s R-Rated Crime Thriller Is Now Available On VOD

Now a contender for one of Matt Smith’s best movies as well as one of Austin Butler’s best movies, the hit crime thriller Caught Stealing is available on digital starting today. Black Swan and The Wrestler director Darren Aronofsky’s latest project arrived in theaters on August 29 and holds an 84% critics’ approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Caught Stealing is a dark comedy action movie also starring Zoë Kravitz, Regina King, Vincent D’Onofrio, Bad Bunny, Carol Kane, and more, following a former high school baseball prodigy who finds himself in the middle of a deal gone wrong between gangsters when his neighbor leaves town for a few days.

Caught Stealing is available to rent or purchase on platforms such as Amazon and Apple TV as of today (September 30). The movie was technically a box office flop, grossing only $31 million worldwide on a budget of $40 million, but it could now get its due on VOD. Additionally, Caught Stealing has its physical release coming soon, which could also help earn back its budget.

Caught Stealing Also Sets DVD Release Date & Confirms Bonus Features

Sony Pictures has confirmed that Caught Stealing will be available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on November 11, with a selection of bonus features. The featurettes that will be included are:

  • Aronofsky: The Real Deal – Director Darren Aronofsky and Screenwriter/Author Charlie Huston explore the genesis of the film, the process of adaptation, and how to keep audiences guessing.
  • Casting Criminals, Chaos, and a Cat – Austin Butler leads an incredible ensemble of actors – hear from the cast and crew on their characters, filming on set, and more!
  • New York Story – From nosy neighbors to Black & White cookies, Caught Stealing is a love letter to New York.
  • I Don’t Drive – Whether he’s running through traffic or hanging from a sixth-story balcony, Austin Butler brought an intense physicality to his performance as washed-up baseball player Hank Thompson.

Aronofsky has long been established as a prestige filmmaker, and his bold pictures, from Black Swan to Mother! to Caught Stealing, provoke intrigue about what went into making them. The latter’s DVD release offers a look behind the scenes, including features about how the story was developed and Butler’s career-defining lead performance.

Caught Stealing‘s reviews also especially highlighted its skillful exhibition of 1990s New York, making it exciting that there will be a feature that is all about this element. As Hank runs from his life throughout Caught Stealing‘s runtime, the movie manages to show a lot of New York, all captured by Matthew Libatique’s deft cinematography.

What This Means For Caught Stealing

Caught Stealing has apparently dropped out of the awards season conversation by now — the compeтιтion is just too strong — and its box office run was a disappointment. But it truly has the makings of a cult classic, with its bold premise and wacky characters being excellently played by a stellar and popular cast.

It’s somewhat surprising that Caught Stealing wasn’t a bigger hit in theaters; it seemingly just lacked the widespread appeal to attract a huge crowd. However, it’s a well-made movie by an expert filmmaker with surprising depth to it, but it is still humorous and moves at a fast pace. Something this wild could thus do very well on digital and later streaming.
