Jay Kelly has released a new trailer, showing more of the highly anticipated dramedy starring George Clooney and Adam Sandler. Netflix’s new Oscars compeтιтor stars Clooney as the тιтular character, a star who became famous for playing himself, with Sandler as his friend and manager.
Jay Kelly is from writer-director Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, Frances Ha) and also stars Laura Dern, Isla Fisher, Riley Keough, Jim Broadbent, and many others, including Baumbach’s partner and frequent collaborator Greta Gerwig. Following its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, Jay Kelly will be released in select theaters on November 14 and globally on Netflix on December 5.

As shown here, Jay Kelly is set to explore themes of idenтιтy and legacy, with Jay and Ron reflecting on the meaning of the Jay Kelly celebrity they created together, as they apparently travel through Europe following Jay’s daughter. They are accompanied by Liz (Dern), Jay’s fed-up publicist.
Jay Kelly debuted with a strong Rotten Tomatoes score and is widely seen as a serious Oscar contender. This could be Clooney’s fifth acting nomination overall, and his first since 2011’s The Descendants, as well as Sandler’s very first Oscar nomination.
What This Means For Jay Kelly
This trailer further develops the story of Netflix’s high-profile venture for potential audiences after Jay Kelly‘s teaser trailer, which seemingly focused on Clooney’s character obsessively saying his own name. But Jay Kelly now looks to be a fairly grounded, pensive exploration of the circumstances of fame, what goes into creating a movie star, and the friendships forged throughout it.
Audiences and critics are likely to have a lot of faith in Baumbach as a writer who excels at crafting these contained diatribes on relationships and idenтιтy, which will draw people to this new movie. Early praise for Jay Kelly and strong marketing highlighting it being a bold new project for its leading cast are setting it up for a strong box office run and Netflix debut.
Our Take On Jay Kelly’s New Trailer
Jay Kelly looks like a thoughtful drama about personal fulfillment with Baumbach’s signature touch, even somewhat reminiscent of Frances Ha. While I think it’s a strong possibility that both Clooney and Sandler get acting nominations, I can’t see the movie overall winning that many awards in the face of superior compeтιтion.
Much depends on what kind of momentum and goodwill Jay Kelly amᴀsses with its wide release, but even if it isn’t an Oscar winner, it still could come to be seen as one of George Clooney’s best movies.
