The DCU Batman Movie Gets An Exciting Release Date Update From James Gunn

The Brave and The Bold movie gets a big update about its DC Universe release date from James Gunn. Bruce Wayne is one of the many heroes who will be getting his due in the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” slate, as a reboot is in the works for the beloved superhero.

The project has been in the works since it was announced in January 2023, as it will focus on an established iteration of the Caped Crusader in Gunn’s new comic book franchise. However, many are wondering when the film is actually set to be released in theaters.

As Gunn was asked on Threads by a user, “People are saying Batman the Brave and the Bold could release around 2030-2031, are you looking for a release date as late as that,” the DC Studios co-CEO set the record straight with the following update:

While keeping it short and sweet, the Superman director said “No,” as there have been no reports about when the film is set to be released. As of right now, the DC story is still being worked on by a writer—although it’s unknown who is writing the script—with director Andy Muschietti attached to helm.

Many have ᴀssumed that because The Batman universe, which is returning in October 2027, is continuing, DC Studios would somehow have to wait with their reboot for the Dark Knight. However, while both films likely won’t be released in the same calendar year, it doesn’t mean they have to wait as late as 2030-2031.

With two live-action Batman actors at the same time, the DCU’s version could still be eyed for a 2028 release, as nothing has been slated for that year yet. It all depends on how the script comes together, as no project at DC Studios goes forward until it has been finalized.

Even in recent DCU movie updates about the project, it has already been hinted that some of the initial plans for the story are being retooled. But if the vision gets completed for the film within the next couple of months, that could set the entry up for a potential 2028 release window, with filming in 2027.

If the goal is to still release two live-action films a year, it makes sense if The Brave and The Bold movie happens as early as 2028, allowing there to be enough space after Matt Reeves’ 2027 sequel. It’d also be ideal to have the Gotham City crimefighter as one of the big тιтles for DC Studios that year, alongside another potential major film in Gunn’s franchise.

As the DCU timeline is continuing to grow, Gunn has talked about casting the role with some names in mind, meaning things could finally be coming full circle for the project. Hopefully, if The Brave and The Bold script gets finished by early 2026, the world will be closer to finally meeting the next cinematic take on Batman.
