Chris Evans’ latest film, Honey Don’t!, has just set its streaming release date after underwhelming at the box office. Directed by Ethan Coen, the comedic crime thriller stars Margaret Qualley as Honey O’Donahue, a private investigator who attempts to unravel the truth behind a series of deaths linked to a mysterious church.
Evans plays a prominent role in the Honey Don’t! cast as Reverend Drew Devlin, with Aubrey Plaza costarring as MG Falcone, and Charlie Day as Marty Metakawitch. The film hit theaters on August 22 and grossed only $7 million worldwide, despite the strong leads.
Now, CBR reports that Honey Don’t! will arrive on Peacock on Friday, October 3. This streaming release comes several weeks after the film landed on major VOD platforms.
What This Means For Honey Don’t!
Honey Don’t marks the second installment in Coen and cowriter Trisha Cooke’s lesbian B-movie trilogy after Drive-Away Dolls (2024). Though neither film has been successful commercially, a third film тιтled Go, Beavers! is now in development.
The critical response to Coen’s latest hasn’t been glowing, with the film sporting a Rotten Tomatoes score of only 46%. In his Honey Don’t! review for ScreenRant, Todd Gilchrist awards the film a more favorable score of six out of 10, praising the strong performances, particularly from Qualley. Gilchrist writes:
After playing high-profile roles in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Poor Things, and The Substance that traded subversively on her coltish beauty, Coen zeroes in on the calculating intelligence that underpinned those and other earlier performances by Qualley to give Honey integrity and an appealing swagger.
Honey Don’t! is estimated to carry a budget of about $20 million, meaning it could have been looking at a break-even point of $50 million. At a $7 million global haul, the film is obviously a major disappointment financially. It fared about the same as Drive-Away Dolls, which grossed $7.9 million.
Considering the Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter score is worse than the critics’ score at 40%, it doesn’t seem likely Honey Don’t will benefit much from audience word-of-mouth. Still, the actors involved could help it succeed on home-viewing platforms, and a Peacock release means its viewership is about to increase.
Our Take On Honey Don’t!’s Streaming Release
There is fun to be had with Honey Don’t!, with some classic Coen-style humor and violence shining through. The movie may not have delivered as a theatrical experience, but as a more casual watch at home, maybe it will fare better.
If the response to this film and Drive-Away Dolls proves anything, though, it’s that the movie-going world needs Ethan Coen to reunite with his brother Joel. Despite being responsible for classics like No Country for Old Men (2007), The Big Lebowski (1998), and Fargo (1996), the pair haven’t made a film together since The Ballad of Buster Scruggs in 2018.
It remains to be seen whether another Coen Brothers movie will ever get made, but Ethan is evidently keeping busy in the meantime. As the wait continues for a Coen reunion, Honey Don’t! landing on Peacock will help tide fans over with a dose of that familiar Coen-style mayhem.
