Spaceballs 2 First Image Mocks The Force Awakens & Reveals Rick Moranis’ Acting Return

A first image of the full cast for Spaceballs 2, including the OG stars and fresh talent, reveals Rick Moranis’ highly anticipated return to acting as production gets underway. The 1987 spoof of Star Wars known as Spaceballs follows Lone Starr as he rescues Princess Vespa and becomes a galactic hero.

Spaceballs 2 was announced to be in the works in June 2025. Now, Amazon MGM Studios has officially confirmed the cast of Spaceballs 2, which is expected in 2027, and released an image of the stars behind the scenes. Spaceballs 2 will star Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, Mel Brooks, Daphne Zuniga, George Wyner, Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan.

Moranis, Zuniga, Bill Pullman, Brooks, and Wyner are reprising their roles from the 1987 MGM cult comedy classic, while details about the characters being played by the new cast are being kept under wraps. Notably, the pH๏τo released by Amazon MGM of the cast’s table read mimics the style and set-up of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens cast pH๏τo released more than a decade ago.

Josh Greenbaum is directing Spaceballs 2, with a script by Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez. Brooks, Gad, Greenbaum, and Kevin Salter are producing alongside Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Jeb Brody, with Samit, Hernandez, and Adam Merims executive producing. Ironically, the original Star Wars re-release in theaters is also planned for 2027 for its 50th anniversary.

What This Update Means For Spaceballs 2

Most of these actors were at least rumored to be a part of Spaceballs 2 prior to the most recent update, but Amazon MGM’s announcement is still a welcome confirmation. The most attention has been paid to Moranis’ coming out of retirement to again portray Dark Helmet, but stars like Josh Gad and Keke Palmer are comedic gold for the sequel to have.

Both the announcement of Spaceballs 2 and now this cast pH๏τo confirm that the sequel is embracing the spirit of the original: shamelessly making fun of Star Wars, and likely some other seminal works of science fiction. Luckily, they are intelligently mocking all the content and the way it was marketed over the intervening years since 1987.

The team at Amazon MGM further showcases their understanding of the kind of humor that will make this movie work, teasing in a statement: “While the тιтle and plot details are being kept under wraps, the тιтle is rumored to be the name of the movie, and plot details are being described as information about what happens in the story.”

Our Take On Spaceballs 2 Starting Production

Things have progressed quickly since Spaceballs 2 was announced, proving that the studio is serious about producing this sequel in a timely fashion. Moreover, Spaceballs 2 understands that it is not only making fun of Star Wars this time around, but the kind of movie it is itself.

However, with the early marketing for Spaceballs 2 being genuinely clever, I expect this movie to be more pure fun than usual, as legacy sequels go.
