DC Confirms The Penguin’s Design For New Batman Movie

The new Batman movie features the Penguin alongside its expansive villain roster, and the DC character sports a unique design that makes him stand out from past adaptations. Batman has a famous rogues’ gallery, with many of those characters making their way to the live-action Batman movies that have been released so far. A few of them have appeared multiple times.

That includes the likes of the Joker, the Penguin, the Riddler, and more. With at least two live-action Batman movies — Robert Pattinson’s The Batman 2 and the DC Universe’s The Brave and the Bold — in active development, more Gotham City villains will soon grace the big screen. Before that happens, a new animated Batman movie gives several villains a makeover.

DC Has Revealed What Aztec Batman’s Penguin Looks Like

Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires is out on digital. The DC movie does something fresh with Batman’s mythos, bringing forth new interpretations of classic DC Comics characters. For instance, the Joker is called Yoka, with the villain starting as a priest, performing human sacrifices. Hernán Cortés, the leader of the conquistadors, becomes Two-Face in the R-rated Batman movie.

Given the changes to all the Batman characters who appear in the movie, the Penguin went through the same process. Different from the likes of the Joker, Two-Face, and others, the Penguin does not play a direct role in Aztec Batman‘s story. Instead, the character arrives in the Batman movie’s post-credits scene. The Penguin sports a striking plague doctor mask.

DC’s new version of the Penguin also wields a silver cane with a bird head at its tip. The character is seemingly a priest who arrives in Mexico to help the conquistadors after Batman and his allies defeat them. Speaking to ScreenRant, Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires composer Ego Plum further explained the Penguin’s debut. Check out the full quote below:

That’s a good question. It’ll give away a little bit, but there’s a religious sort of quality to this character. Perhaps he’s like a priest. With having an ᴀssociation of the church, with the grand organs, of course that comes later in history, but there’s this nice religious quality to organ playing and organ melodies that I thought would be appropriate, even though it is a bit anachronistic as far as time. I thought it would be interesting.

How Aztec Batman’s Penguin Compares To Other DC Movie Versions Of The Penguin

With Aztec Batman‘s release happening not long after Colin Farrell led HBO’s successful The Penguin series, that version of the character is the one he will be compared to the most. In the series and The Batman, Farrell’s Penguin wore gangster clothes. At the end of the show, he put on the Penguin’s classic tuxedo, carrying his top hat with him.

Both the gangster outfits and the classic costume differ greatly from Aztec Batman‘s Penguin and his plague doctor mask and priest clothes. That said, the animated version of the character wears a hat to parallel his classic look. Aztec Batman‘s Penguin also differs from Danny DeVito’s from Batman Returns, who donned his signature costume, making the new Batman movie’s Penguin look distinct.
