Zach Cregger has confirmed that he is working on a Weapons prequel. Cregger wrote and directed the 2025 horror hit, which earned a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and has made $263 million worldwide. Not long after the movie’s release, talk about a potential prequel revolving around one of its breakout characters began. Well, the prequel is officially in development.
Weapons takes place in a small town where all but one child in an elementary school class mysteriously go missing one night, leaving a community rattled and desperate for answers. The movie stars Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Austin Abrams, and Amy Madigan, whose Aunt Gladys is expected to be the center of the proposed Weapons prequel.
Talking with Fangoria about Weapons digital release, Cregger confirmed that a prequel around Aunt Gladys is being explored. The director said:
“It is real and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros. about it. There’s a story and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s not bulls–t.”
Cregger also shared that this idea did not come about only after Weapons became a box office success, but that he “had it kind of in my pocket before the movie came out.”
What This Means For A Weapons Prequel
Cregger confirming that he is working on a Weapons prequel is exciting news for everyone that saw and enjoyed the horror movie. Madigan’s Gladys was one of the most praised parts of the movie, with many believing that Madigan deserves Oscar attention.
Now, while Cregger has confirmed that the project is being worked on, Warner Bros. has not officially announced a Weapons prequel yet, so this is not an official guarantee that the movie will come together. Cregger is already working on a new Resident Evil movie, while he also recently shared an update about a Gotham City DC script that could be coming to the DC Universe.
If Cregger wants to make this movie, it would be surprising if it doesn’t come to fruition based on his recent string of success.
Our Take On A Weapons Prequel
Madigan’s Gladys was my favorite part of Weapons, so I am definitely intrigued by a prequel around her character. Without going into spoilers for anyone who may discover the movie for the first time when it arrives for at-home viewing, there’s plenty of potential in exploring Gladys’ backstory.
I also find it very encouraging that Cregger was thinking about an Aunt Gladys prequel prior to Weapons‘ release. It’s not surprising that Warner Bros. would want a follow-up based on Weapons‘ success, but that Cregger already had an area he wanted to explore in that event indicates that this isn’t just the studio trying to strike while the iron is H๏τ, but that Cregger has more story he wants to tell.
Considering the acclaim that Cregger has earned for not only Weapons but his breakout movie Barbarian, that should get movie fans everywhere excited.
