Star Wars Explains Rey & Kylo’s The Force Dyad, 6 Years After The Rise of Skywalker

Six years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the most unexpected Star Wars TV show has finally explained the Force Dyad between Rey and Kylo Ren. Viewers had long speculated about the bond between Rey and Kylo Ren, and it was only explained by The Rise of Skywalker when Palpatine realized they were a Force Dyad.

The Rise of Skywalker never really defined what the Force Dyad was, but we’ve gradually put the pieces together. Surprisingly, though, the Force Dyad has now been defined much better in the last place anyone would expectLEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past, which released today on Disney+.

Pieces Of The Past Introduced A New Force Dyad

The original LEGO Star Wars TV show introduced Sig and Dev Greebling, two brothers who found themselves devoted to opposite sides of the Force. Sig was sworn to the light side, learning to be a Jedi, while Dev was sworn to conquer the galaxy as leader of the Sith. Their true relationship is defined in the sequel.

Pieces of the Past reveals that Sig and Dev are part of a Force Dyad, more powerful than the sum of their parts. When they finally work together, they are able to accomplish feats that transcend time and space. The in-universe reference book Secrets of the Sith book confirms that was true of a Dyad in canon as well.

The True Nature Of The Dyad Has Been Revealed

Sig and Dev’s Force Dyad is different, of course; they are twins, of course, bound together in the Force as a result. In contrast, Charles Soule and Will Sliney’s The Rise of Kylo Ren suggests the bond between Rey and Kylo Ren was created by the Force itself at the moment Ben Solo fell to the dark side.

The clear implication is that, in either case, the Force Dyad is created by the will of the Force.

Notice, though, that the Force Dyad involves both the light and dark sides of the Force. Kylo Ren had been imprisoned by the dark side (he never truly choose it, as we are seeing in recent comics), while Rey ultimately dedicated herself to the light. This explains why Dyads are rare; they involve both in unison.

Curiously, this raises the possibility that we have seen another Dyad in recent Star Wars TV shows; the twins Mae and Osha, who appeared in The Acolyte, and who seemed to hold one another in balance. Many viewers had theorized they were a Dyad before The Acolyte‘s cancellation, and that now seems likely to be true.

We Now Know The Purpose Of The Force Dyad, Too

The parallels between Sig and Dev on the one hand, and Rey and Kylo Ren on the other, hint at the Force’s purpose for a Dyad: redemption. In both cases, the Force establishes a transcendent bond between two beings that will draw one back from the dark side and towards the light.

Redemption, of course, is the ultimate theme of Star Wars. This is the smartest possible reveal, tying the Force Dyad in to this vital idea in the best possible way. It’s a fantastic way of improving The Rise of Skywalker‘s best idea, one that the movie failed to explore as it deserved.
