Sylvester Stallone Has A Shocking Response About The Making Of Rocky Movie

Sylvester Stallone speaks out on whether he is involved in the upcoming film I Play Rocky. Set to be directed by Peter Farrelly, the new movie will be a dramatization of the true story of the making of the landmark sports film Rocky. One of the best underdog movies ever, the boxing movie would go on to win three Oscars and become a defining work in its genre.

Stepping in to play Stallone is actor Anthony Ippolito, who has previously appeared in the TV miniseries The Offer and the Netflix movie Purple Hearts.

In an interview with The Playlist, Stallone revealed that he is not officially a part of I Play Rocky. The acting legend described feeling fairly “blindsided” by the film’s announcement, saying that he was “shocked” to hear word about it. However, Stallone acknowledges that the publication of his recent memoir, The Steps, could be his ticket to some involvement.

Check out the full quote from Stallone below:

I was shocked to read [about] it. I have zero to do with it. Since I lived it, I thought I might be able to participate and give them some insight.

Given that the film dramatizes the time period in which Rocky was made, it would be impossible for Stallone to have played himself without some serious de-aging CGI. That said, Stallone is right that he could have “give[n] them some insight and guidance on the story, as he is a major player in the events that went on.

Not involving Stallone at a deep level is a big risk for Farrelly and his team. Previous experiences, such as directing the Oscar-winning movie Green Book, might bolster the director’s confidence, but he has seemingly chosen not to consult the person who likely has the best account as to what went into the original movie’s production.

If there is one thing to ᴀssume from this news about I Play Rocky, it’s that this is most ᴀssuredly not a Stallone biopic. This was already known based on the premise of the movie, but the lack of consultation with the actor suggests that the movie will decenter Stallone. Rather, it can shift focus to more overarching aspects of the production, showcasing a variety of other people.

This is one primary way that, if done effectively, I Play Rocky can actually stand out from its predecessors. 2023 saw the release of the Netflix documentary Sly, which offered an avenue for audiences to understand Stallone’s career through his own eyes. In contrast, I Play Rocky‘s making-of story will be a new approach.
