One Of The Biggest Disney Channel Franchises Is Getting New Sequel After 15 Years

The Disney Channel original movie franchise Camp Rock is reportedly now the latest classic 2000s property from the network to be getting a revival. Starring Demi Lovato and the Jonas Brothers, 2008’s Camp Rock and 2010’s Camp Rock: The Final Jam follow the trials and tribulations of the aspiring artists at a music summer camp.

Disney Branded Television announced today that a third movie in the Camp Rock franchise is in the works, with Joe, Nick, and Kevin Jonas reprising their roles as Shane, Nick, and Jason Gray, who make up the fictional band Connect 3. Lovato and the Jonas brothers will executive produce, while original cast member Maria Canals-Barrera (Wizards of Waverly Place) will also return.

Sherry Cola is also being introduced to the franchise, while the cast of new campers is confirmed to include Liamani Segura as Sage, Malachi Barton as Fletch, Lumi Pollack as Rosie, Hudson Stone as Desi, Casey Trotter as Cliff, Brooklynn Pitts as Callie, and Ava Jean as Madison.

The story will follow Connect 3 returning to Camp Rock after losing their opening act, searching for new talent to open for them, and prompting fierce compeтιтion among the next generation of campers. Camp Rock 3‘s production reportedly began this week in Vancouver. Ayo Davis, the president of Disney Branded Television, said in a statement:

Camp Rock is an important part of the Disney Channel Original Movie legacy, with unforgettable music, energetic storytelling, and characters that live in the hearts of fans to this day. Bringing it back with Kevin, Joe, Nick and Demi is such a full-circle moment, and we can’t wait to reintroduce this world to a new generation.

What This Means For Camp Rock’s Legacy

The Camp Rock installments are among the most popular Disney Channel original movies ever, and a continuation of the franchise is bound to provoke mixed feelings in fans. 2000s kids may be hungry for this particular burst of nostalgia, but they also will not want to see their favorite childhood movies tainted by a poor follow-up.

Lovato and the Jonas Brothers’ involvement is a good sign for Camp Rock 3, as they know better than anyone what made the originals work. It could result in a welcome, fresh entry for old fans and new, with the original headliners stepping into executive roles, where they are afforded more creative control and can draw upon their own experiences.

Our Take On Camp Rock 3

This constant string of reboots and revivals has frustrated everyone, I think, at one point or another. However, I am also a big fan of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, the revival of the classic Disney TV show Wizards of Waverly Place, produced by OG stars David Henrie and Selena Gomez.

That being said, Camp Rock 3 deserves a chance to prove that it can be a creative new installment that puts its own spin on the premise and dynamics established by the original movies. Lovato’s Mitchie may only be referenced, while the Gray brothers will still be major characters, setting up a different kind of conflict, but hopefully, the same catchy music and uplifting ending.
