The Final Downton Abbey Movie Hits Major Box Office Milestone In Less Than One Week

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale has pᴀssed a major box office milestone. The movie is the third feature-length installment in the long-running historical drama franchise, which follows the residents and staff of the тιтular country estate. It kicked off as a popular television drama that ran for six seasons on ITV between 2010 and 2015.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale reviews earned the movie a Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 91% with an even better, Verified H๏τ, audience score of 96% on the Popcornmeter. It premiered with a 3-day domestic debut of $18.1 million, which marked the second best opening weekend of the trilogy behind 2019’s Downton Abbey ($31 million).

Per The Numbers, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale has now reached a cumulative global box office total of $34.6 million, comprising $22.3 million from domestic theaters and $12.3 million from international markets. This means it has pᴀssed the $30 million global milestone before the end of its first full week in theaters, having debuted on September 12.

What This Means For Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale

By hitting this milestone on its fifth day in theaters, The Grand Finale is maintaining its trajectory toward becoming the second highest-grossing of the Downton Abbey movies. In addition to its opening weekend landing above 2022’s A New Era ($16 million), its day 5 domestic total has exceeded its immediate predecessor, which had only earned $19.7 million by that point.

However, it still has a way to climb if it hopes to officially become the second highest-grossing movie in the franchise by the end of its run. Thanks to robust international play, A New Era earned $92.7 million worldwide. This means that the new movie still needs to earn an additional $58.1 million in order to surpᴀss it.

This may not be easy for 2025’s Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. Both previous movies earned more internationally than they did domestically, but so far that is not the case for the new installment. So far, its international grosses only make up 35% of its overall global gross, which could indicate diminishing returns overseas.

One potential pitfall for Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is the fact that its reported $50 million budget makes it the most expensive installment. Its estimated break-even point could be as high as $125 million, which would require it to perform significantly better than A New Era in order to turn a profit before the end of its theatrical run.
