Star Wars’ Mysterious New Force Cult May Be Older Than The Jedi

New reports suggest Ahsoka season 2 will introduce a new Force cult, one that may predate the Jedi Order itself. The first season of Ahsoka rewrote the history of the Star Wars galaxy, revealing an ancient intergalactic empire tied to the extragalactic planet Peridea. The ancestral homeworld of the Nightsisters of Dathomir, this seems to have been where the first Force users came from.

Ahsoka season 2 will surely feature more revelations about the Nightsisters. Grand Admiral Thrawn has made their planet Dathomir his base, while Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren are stranded on distant Peridea. New reports from the British Stunt Registry provide evidence that we’ll actually meet another Dathomiri cult…

Ahsoka Season 2 Will Reportedly Introduce The Bog Sisters

According to the British Film Registry (via Mandoverse Updates), Ahsoka season 2 will reportedly feature new characters called the Bog Sisters. We’ve previously met two separate clans of Dathomiri, the Nightsisters and the Mountain Clan, and it’s safe to ᴀssume these Bog Sisters are a third faction.

This matches with reports from Star Wars Celebration, where concept art from Ahsoka season 2 included brief glimpses of what seemed to be another Dathomiri faction.

It’s interesting to speculate that the Bog Witches could be tied to the old Star Wars Expanded Universe concept for the Nightsisters, that they rode Rancors, the formidable beasts seen in Return of the Jedi; there are subtle hints in the recent Star Wars Bestiary Vol. 1 that may imply the Rancors originated from swamps on Dathomir.

Will The Bog Witches Be On Dathomir… Or Peridea?

So far, speculation suggests that the Bog Witches will be a new faction introduced on Dathomir, previously unseen (just as the Mountain Clan had never appeared in canon before Tales of the Bounty Hunters). But that isn’t the only possibility; there’s no reason to ᴀssume the Dathomiri abandoned Peridea millennia ago, meaning they could instead be encountered there by Ahsoka.

We already know Peridea is inhabited (by a race Ezra Bridger befriended, called the Noti, as well as a group of bandits). There were even hints that Thrawn and the Nightsisters had been locked in conflict with other forces there, and it’s entirely possible the Bog Sisters were those enemies of the Empire.

Could The Bog Sisters Be Older Than The Jedi?

Wherever the Bog Sisters may be found, they may well predate the Jedi Order itself. Ahsoka season 1 confirmed that the Dathomiri (or, perhaps, Perideans) explored the galaxy over 25,000 years ago, long before the dawn of the Jedi and the founding of the Republic. Something happened to that intergalactic empire, causing it to collapse, leaving many Dathomiri stranded in the Star Wars galaxy.

This means any Dathomiri Force cult could potentially be older than the Jedi and the Sith (explaining why their magicks are so different to typical uses of the Force). It’s even possible the Bog Witches have ties to the Mortis Gods, avatars of the Force who appear to be tied to Peridea and who Filoni has teased will be explored in Ahsoka season 2.

We’ll have to wait and see as more is revealed. For now, all we have is the name – a reference to Bog Witches, and some theories and deductions. The truth will likely only be seen when Ahsoka season 2 releases next year.
