Wicked: For Good’s Crucial Song Change Is A Promising Tease For The Sequel

Wicked: For Good is upgrading one of Act 2’s most pivotal songs, which can only improve the sequel as a whole. Set for release in November, Jon M. Chu’s highly anticipated fantasy epic will cover the back half of the beloved Broadway show. This time around, Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) has fully become the Wicked Witch of the West, while Glinda (Ariana Grande) is loyally serving the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum).

Act 2 of Wicked features iconic songs like “No Good Deed” and the тιтular “For Good,” but for many, the most anticipated number is “As Long as You’re Mine,” the steamy duet between Elphaba and Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey). The song takes place roughly halfway through Act 2 and finds the two lovers finally letting all of their feelings out into the open.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Chu revealed Wicked: For Good will increase the romance during “As Long as You’re Mine,” stating, “You finally get to feel the ascension that they give each other through the relationship.” Not only is this an exciting change for fans of the song, it also speaks to a promising aspect of the sequel.

Wicked: For Good Can Go Deeper With Its Characters And Their Relationships

In the Wicked stage show, the only true romantic moment between Elphaba and Fiyero is “As Long as You’re Mine”; they don’t even share much dialogue before the dramatic events of the musical’s climax tear them apart. It sounds like Chu is using the movie’s increased runtime to further develop their relationship, perhaps by giving them more time together or adding a few additional scenes.

This mandate could be applied to a number of character dynamics in Wicked: For Good. The musical’s Act 2 moves at a much quicker pace than Act 1, meaning many huge developments are quickly glossed over. There’s also a time jump, and we find characters in vastly different places than where they were before. Much of the story is devoted to pushing the plot forward rather than expanding characters.

The film now has the chance to deepen all of these surprising new dynamics. Nessarose’s (Marissa Bode) relationship with Boq (Ethan Slater) is intensely different from how it was in Wicked, and Glinda and Fiyero are on the verge of marriage. These are all changes that deserve greater detail in the film, if only to increase the emotional impact of what happens to everyone.

There are already signs that Wicked: For Good is taking this opportunity to heart. Elphaba and Glinda will share more scenes, and there are at least two new songs. The first movie was nearly three hours long, yet only covered one half of the musical. If For Good comes even a little bit close to that length, it will need to fill in a lot of gaps.

Hopefully, the film will use the space to make beneficial additions to the story, rather than anything that compromises the musical we all know and love. Further developing the romantic connection between Elphaba and Fiyero is a great start, and it only makes Wicked: For Good even more exciting.
