A24 Wants Texas Chainsaw Mᴀssacre – But That Won’t Stop Netflix’s Movie

A24 is making a big push to land the rights to Texas Chainsaw Mᴀssacre, but that doesn’t mean a previously discussed Netflix movie is off the table. The horror franchise that made Leatherface a household name has been stirring up a bidding war in Hollywood, but the future of Texas Chainsaw Mᴀssacre is becoming a bit clearer.

While a deal has not been finalized, it appears that A24 is the leading contender to land the film and TV rights for Texas Chainsaw Mᴀssacre. That could quickly lead to a TV series from JT Mollner, Roy Lee and Glen Powell; Powell is not expected to star in the series, per reports.

A new Texas Chainsaw Mᴀssacre film is also a possibility, with A24 producing the movie that could ultimately wind up on Netflix. Netflix released the most recent Texas Chainsaw Mᴀssacre movie in 2022, though all indications are this would be a new story based on the characters first brought to the screen by Kim Henkel and Tobe Hooper in 1974.

What This Means For Texas Chainsaw Mᴀssacre

A24 horror movies have seen critical and box office success. Lee has produced some of the biggest horror movies of the last few years, including Barbarian, Weapons, and The Long Walk. He also produced Strange Darling, which Mollner directed. Add in Powell, and it’s a promising group to potentially steer the Texas Chainsaw Mᴀssacre franchise for a new generation.

They also reportedly beat out some major compeтιтion for the rights. Bryan Bertino (The Strangers) and Oz Perkins (Longlegs) pitched a Texas Chainsaw feature idea. Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan also pushed to produce his own take on the franchise, as did Get Out and Nope writer/director/producer Jordan Peele.

There’s no timetable right now for when a new version of Texas Chainsaw Mᴀssacre could come out should the A24 deal officially close, but things could move quickly.

Though the original Texas Chainsaw Mᴀssacre celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024, the movie is still one of the most beloved and revered horror movies of all time. Variety gave it their top ranking in their 2024 list of the 100 best horror movies of all time.

The Texas Chainsaw Mᴀssacre (1974) is currently streaming on Netflix, Peacock, and Prime Video.

While that’s a high bar – and my colleague Adrienne Talyor argues there’s only one way for a Texas Chainsaw Mᴀssacre movie to succeed – I’d immediately be interested in whatever A24, Lee, Mollner, and Powell come up with. It could be an exciting new chapter for Leatherface.
