Blumhouse’s Most Underwhelming Thriller Is Seeking Redemption On September 26

M3GAN 2.0‘s streaming release date has been revealed following the film’s disappointing theatrical performance. Directed Gerard Johnstone, the Blumhouse movie hit screens on June 27, marking the return of the тιтular killer robot, this time to face off against a rival bot named AMELIA.

Despite the major success of the original, which released in 2022, M3GAN 2.0 released to mixed reviews and very low audience interest. The film ended its theatrical run as a significant box office disappointment before landing on VOD on July 15.

Now, Blumhouse reveals that M3GAN 2.0 and the unrated version of the film, officially тιтled M3GAN 2.0 (Unrated), will start streaming on Peacock on September 26. Currently, the first film and its unrated version are also streaming on Peacock.

What This Means For M3GAN 2.0

For M3GAN 2.0, VOD and streaming performance represent a chance at redemption. After the original movie grossed a stellar $180 million worldwide, the sequel grossed only about $39 million. Considering the film was made on an estimated budget of $25 million, it very likely failed to break even.

Though the film was a major box office disappointment, the response from audiences wasn’t all bad. On Rotten Tomatoes, M3GAN 2.0 may have a lackluster 58% from critics, but the Popcornmeter score is far higher at 81%. The critics’ score falls far behind the original’s 93%, but the audience score ended up coming in higher, with the 2022 outing sporting a 78%.

This positive reception from audiences could be a sign that M3GAN 2.0 will be a popular offering on Peacock. The fact that the unrated version is releasing at the same time could also be a draw, as the promise of an increase in violence could be an attractive proposition for some.

Even strong VOD and streaming performance, however, seems unlikely to turn the tide for the film in a broader sense, as the film may have missed its break-even point by more than $20 million. The film’s failure even prompted a response from Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum, who said on The Town podcast that the company overestimated M3GAN‘s potential:

“We all thought M3gan was like Superman—we could do anything to her. We could change genres, we could put her in the summer, we could make her look different, we could turn her from a bad guy into a good guy. And we kind of classically overthought how powerful people’s engagement was, really, with her.”

Rights deals mean both M3GAN movies are on Peacock, but it seems like the sequel’s reach could be greatly expanded if it were instead going to stream on Netflix. Even though the movie may have been a theatrical failure, the right streaming situation could see it reach a substantial audience.

M3GAN 2.0‘s addition of AMELIA does make the film a fun experience. Combined with some winking humor and an unserious tone, the sequel is often entertaining, and it could feel right at home as a streaming film.

While M3GAN 2.0 seems sure to be a relatively strong performer on Peacock, audiences who enjoy the franchise should absolutely not hold out any hope for a third outing for the violent robot. While this Blumhouse property won’t be expanding any further, the sequel will, at the very least, be a lot easier to watch on September 26.
