Judy Warren (Mia Tomlinson) is a major character in The Conjuring: Last Rites, so let’s explore what happened to her in real life. The Conjuring: Last Rites is based on a true story, but like all the other films in the series, fictional elements are added in. For example, Judy wasn’t actually involved in the real-life Smurl case at all.
However, the Hollywood retelling of the paranormal case included Judy so that the potential final movie in the Conjuring franchise could heavily focus on the Warren family. Ed and Lorraine Warren have always been the heart of the Conjuring franchise, so Judy’s major role allows Last Rites to become even more of a family drama.
Even though Judy wasn’t actually involved in the Smurl case, she did indeed marry Tony Spera (Ben Hardy) in real life, as is seen at the end of The Conjuring: Last Rites. This proves that not every detail about Judy in the film is inaccurate. Here’s what happened to Judy in real life after she married Tony.
Judy Warren’s Life With Husband Tony Spera
Along with Judy, Tony Spera is also a prominent character in The Conjuring: Last Rites. In the movie, it is established that Tony is a former police officer, which is accurate. In a personal essay published on the New England Society for Psychic Research website, Tony claimed that he first saw Judy while on duty in Bloomfield, Connecticut in 1979.
While writing a report in his patrol car, Tony saw Judy pᴀss by and was instantly enamored by her beauty. She waved at him, which prompted Tony to turn on his police lights and follow her as she drove away. Tony followed her to a strip mall, but she had already gone into one of the shops when he arrived.
Luckily, Tony and Judy had a mutual friend who got them in touch with each other. Later that same night, Tony briefly met Judy at a chicken restaurant and asked her on a date. The following night, they went out on their first date and have been together ever since.
Judy and Tony have only been dating for a few months in The Conjuring: Last Rites, which is set in 1986, so it changes the timeline of their relationship. However, just like in the movie, Tony was eventually accepted into the Warren family. Tony took an immediate interest in Ed and Lorraine’s careers and even helped them on several cases.
Conversely, Judy didn’t want anything to do with her parent’s careers early on. In a 2020 interview with Den of Geek, Judy claimed that she spent most of her childhood with her grandparents because her parents traveled so much. Additionally, she revealed that it was difficult to be comfortable in Ed and Lorraine’s home because of all the haunted artifacts.
“I was terrified there, in their house, so I just didn’t sleep there. I couldn’t sleep in a room by myself,” Judy said. However, Judy eventually started celebrating her parents’ careers and now even runs the New England Society for Psychic Research with Tony. Since Ed and Lorraine started this organization in 1952, Judy and Tony are continuing their legacy.
Judy Warren Became A Paranormal Investigator Too
As a leading member of the NESPR, Judy has worked on several paranormal cases herself. According to the NESPR website, Judy, Tony, and their team carry on, “the exploration and investigation of paranormal and demonic enтιтies as initiated by Ed & Lorraine Warren.” Judy has admitted that she believes she has some supernatural abilities, just like her mother.
Speaking with Den of Geek, she said, “I had things happen that I’ll say, ‘Oh, my gosh. How did that happen?’ I don’t know if you want to attribute it to being anything to do with my mother’s gifts, but I have had some things happen. It’s a lot of dreams that are very strange, and warnings – from my father.“
However, unlike her parents, Judy has never been very interested in delving too deeply into the world of the paranormal. She may have ensured her parents’ legacies live on by helping Tony run the organization, but she has never worked on many high-profile paranormal cases herself. Therefore, despite running the NESPR, Judy is not nearly as famous as her parents.
She has supported the Conjuring movies and has celebrated her parents’ work in various interviews, but it seems like Judy has enjoyed a life somewhat out of the spotlight. The Warren’s Occult Museum closed down in 2019, the year Lorraine Warren pᴀssed away, since the popularity of the Conjuring movies was attracting too many visitors and causing problems for residential neighbors.
Judy and Tony still technically own many of the artifacts housed in the museum, but they have leased them to comedian Matt Rife and his friend Elton Castee for five years. These two will start offering visits to the museum and fans of the franchise will even be able to stay overnight at the Warren’s home.
It’s not exactly clear what Judy and Tony will do once this lease is up, but they will surely continue to honor the legacy of Ed and Lorraine Warren. Eagle-eyed viewers will also spot Judy and Tony’s cameos in The Conjuring: Last Rites, which honors not only their own marriage, but also the union of Ed and Lorraine Warren.
