Upcoming Sequel To Smash Hit Could Dethrone New $194 Million Horror Movie’s Box Office Record

The Conjuring: Last Rites set an impressive opening weekend record at the box office, but an upcoming horror movie could beat its record-breaking number. The Conjuring universe is still holding strong. The first film, released in 2013, was a critical and box office success, leading to a cinematic franchise of sequels and spinoffs, including Annabelle and The Nun.

While Last Rites was labeled the final film in the main Conjuring series, Warner Bros. may want to reconsider. The fourth Conjuring film had the best opening of the franchise and set a new record for horror films. It grossed $194 million worldwide, pᴀssing 2017’s It for the highest-grossing opening weekend for any horror movie at the worldwide box office.

The Michael Chaves-directed film continues horror’s excellent box office streak in 2025, joining Sinners and Weapons, which became box office hits. Other upcoming horror films like The Black Phone 2 and Him could also perform well at the box office, but there is one coming later this year that has the strongest chance of beating The Conjuring 4‘s record.

Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 Has A Strong Chance Of Beating The Conjuring 4’s Opening Weekend

Five Nights At Freddy’s is one of the most popular horror video game franchises. Launching in 2014, the murderous animatronics caught the hearts of thousands of players, leading to sequels and spinoffs. In 2023, the series finally got a film adaptation, starring Josh Hutcherson as the security guard who tries to solve the mystery of the abandoned pizza place.

The film was not a hit with critics, earning just a 33% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it overcame its mostly negative reactions at the box office, grossing $297.1 million worldwide, becoming Blumhouse’s highest-grossing film. Freddy’s box office tally was jump started by a killer opening weekend, where it earned $132 million globally.

While Freddy wasn’t a box office juggernaut, its tally is impressive considering the film was also released on Peacock the same day as its theatrical debut, giving fans a choice between their home and the theater. Universal and Blumhouse left plenty of money on the table by giving it a day-and-date release, but that isn’t the case with the sequel.

As of this moment, Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 is exclusively theatrical, meaning there will be no streaming options when it premieres on December 25. After the first film’s stellar opening weekend, there is a strong chance the sequel could pᴀss The Conjuring 4‘s opening weekend, possibly getting into the $200 million range worldwide.

It’s a wildly popular video game franchise that has tons of sequels, spinoffs, merch, and even a house at Universal’s 2025 Halloween Horror Nights in Los Angeles and Orlando. Even if Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 receives similar reviews to the first, the franchise has a pᴀssionate fanbase that could give it a new box office record.
