Fantastic Four: First Steps Dethrones One Final Action Classic Before Leaving Theaters

The Fantastic Four: First Steps‘ box office run is not over yet, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie rising past one of the most iconic action films of all time. It is true that 2025’s MCU films have not seen the same level of success that the franchise was used to during the final stages of the Infinity Saga.

Marvel and superhero movies as a whole are adjusting to a new reality, with bigger films like ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine breaking the $1 billion mark, but others focused on obscure characters like Thunderbolts* paling in comparison. The Fantastic Four: First Steps is the highest-grossing Fantastic Four movie despite its box office not meeting expectations. That said, the film’s theatrical run continues.

Before The Fantastic Four: First Steps leaves theaters, the MCU movie’s box office has left behind Terminator 2: Judgment Day. According to data from The Numbers, Marvel Studios’ first Fantastic Four movie’s worldwide total is at $515.4 million at the time of writing. That is more than the classic action movie’s $515.3 million global box office, which is great for Marvel.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps pᴀssing Terminator 2: Judgment Day‘s box office is no small feat. After all, the latter is widely regarded as one of the most iconic action movies ever made. Its CGI was groundbreaking, paving the way for modern-day visual effects, with its story flipping the dynamic of the action franchise’s first film and doing so phenomenally.

The MCU’s Fantastic Four movie is far from the first live-action film for Marvel’s First Family from the comics. That said, it is the first in the Fantastic Four franchise to surpᴀss Terminator 2: Judgment Day‘s box office or even come close to doing so. Before the 2025 Marvel movie, the highest-grossing Fantastic Four entry was 2005’s Fantastic Four.

That film, which starred MCU star Chris Evans as the Human Torch, grossed $333.1 million globally. As such, it is easy to see how The Fantastic Four: First Steps is the best performer for the Marvel team. While the MCU Fantastic Four movie might not have reached the $1 billion mark of other Marvel hits, pᴀssing Terminator 2: Judgment Day is impressive.

With The Fantastic Four: First Steps‘ Disney+ debut expected to come in the next few months, with VOD before it, every new box office feat the film accomplishes while still in theaters is valuable. After all, this is the first film in the MCU’s Fantastic Four franchise, so all box office marks can help position the franchise closer to a sequel.

Given Terminator 2: Judgment Day‘s status as a commercial hit and one of the most influential action movies of all time, the fact that The Fantastic Four: First Steps‘ box office has surpᴀssed that of director James Cameron’s movie is great for the franchise’s MCU future. With some time left in theaters, the MCU movie can climb even higher at the box office.
