The world may finally get its first look at the follow-up to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which is likely to be тιтled Super Mario World, later this week. The Super Mario Bros. sequel is expected to see the continued adventures of the тιтular plumber in the Mushroom Kingdom, and is set for release next April.
Details have been scarce on the upcoming film, but Nintendo looks set on building a larger universe of characters. A Donkey Kong movie is also in development following the billion-dollar earnings of the first animated Mario film, and it is certain that more sequels and spin-offs will follow from the Japanese studio, although information has been surprisingly scarce.
Mario is the highest-grossing video game movie, and a sequel to the Illumination film is sure to reap incredible grosses at the box office, no matter what shape it takes. Speculation about the new movie has run rampant over the years, but it is now possible that a first look at the film will finally provide clarity later this week.
The September 12 Nintendo Direct Could Finally Give A First Look At Super Mario Bros. 2
An hour-long Nintendo Direct has been announced for September 12 at 9:00 am ET, and it could finally provide the first look at Super Mario World. Nintendo has tended to keep much of its early marketing in-house for its products, streaming live events to give the first looks at consoles, games, and other miscellanea.
The cast list for the first Mario movie was revealed during a Nintendo Direct in September 2021, and the first trailer for the film was shared at another Direct the following year, in October 2022, preceding the movie’s April 2023 release. Following this pattern, there is a strong likelihood that some tease of the upcoming film could occur this week.
Granted, it is unlikely, though not impossible, that Nintendo will release a trailer for the film this Friday. A smaller tease is more likely, perhaps providing the voice casting for new characters like Wario, Pauline, or Rosalina. A first poster could be shown, with a full trailer set to follow in a Direct of its own next month.
Still, 2025 is the 40th Anniversary of Super Mario, and anything could happen. Nintendo is going all in on movies in the coming years after holding its properties close to the vest for decades following the failure of the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie. There is much that could be shared, and Friday could be the perfect time.
Whether or not Nintendo provides a first look at Super Mario World this week, it won’t be much longer until audiences get to see the movie. The film is scheduled for release on April 3, 2026, and is sure to be one of the biggest box office hits of next year. A teaser for the movie will be released soon.
