Extraction 3 & Potential Spinoff For Key Character Gets An Update From Star

Extraction 3 gets a hopeful new update from Golshifteh Farahani, who addresses a potential Nik spinoff. Both of the Extraction movies have been big hits for Netflix, making it no surprise that a third outing for Chris Hemsworth’s mercenary, Tyler Rake, is in development.

After appearing in the first film as an ally, Farahani’s Nik Khan, a private military contractor, returns to play an even bigger role in 2023’s sequel. Extraction 3 was officially announced in summer 2023, with Hemsworth and director Sam Hargrave both expected to return, but there was no word on Nik’s role moving forward.

During a recent interview with ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Farahani reveals that she was recently contacted about returning as Nik for Extraction 3, which AGBO, the Russo Brothers’ production company, is working on. Though it sounds like the star is still in the dark about the film’s actual status, she does mention “next April,” which could be a possible filming start month. Check out her comment below:

“They contacted me just recently saying that AGBO is thinking about Extraction 3, but I have no idea. For me, thinking about tomorrow is hard. When they talk about next April, it’s like, ‘Oh, my god, am I going to be on Earth?’… so, I don’t know, but I do love doing action movies because it’s like preparing for the Olympics. It’s one of the reasons I love doing these extreme action movies, they’re extreme workouts to the core, and I love that.”

Farahani also reveals that a Nik spinoff could be on the cards. As with Extraction 3, though, the star makes clear that she’s not concerning herself too much with it until it’s more of a certainty:

“They were also talking about a spin-off of my character… but one thing I’ve learned in life as an exile, is not to think about anything that is not happening yet.”

What This Means For The Extraction Franchise

If April 2026 is being eyed as a filming start date and is not just a month that Farahani is using as an example, a 2027 release for Extraction 3 is possible. Even though filming would end by mid-2026, Netflix movies often have a long post-production process and can sit on the shelf while the streamer determines an optimal release slate.

A follow-up after the Extraction 2 ending, then, is probably still a few years away, but the franchise shows no signs of going away. It was recently announced, for example, that a spinoff called Mercenary is coming, with Omar Sy set to star as a new operator named Kalidou Diallo as he attempts a daring rescue in Libya.

With Mercenary starting production this month, it will likely arrive next year. From Farahani’s comments, though, it sounds like the Nik spinoff is not yet a sure thing, meaning it’s much further away if it does happen. It’s also not clear if this spinoff would be a TV series or a movie.

Though the Nik spinoff is still in the early stages of development as the Russos determine whether there’s a story worth pursuing there, it could explore the character’s past as a prequel. This would open the door for the return of Yaz (Zurab Radiani), Nik’s brother.

With the well-reviewed Extraction 2, Nik emerged as an intriguing character worthy of further exploration. It would be interesting to chronicle her past, depicting a previous mission, perhaps, and how she came to be allied with Rake.

Whether or not Nik gets her own spinoff, the character should definitely return to play a prominent role in Extraction 3, which will hopefully arrive sooner rather than later. With Hargrave, Hemsworth, and Farahani all returning, the third installment has the potential to be the best yet.
