Amazon MGM Studios is reportedly working on a reboot of the infamous Amityville franchise, which began with 1979’s The Amityville Horror. Stuart Rosenberg’s original adaptation of Jay Anson’s 1977 book of the same name follows a family who is viciously haunted when they move into a house where a young man killed his parents and siblings a year earlier.
Anson’s book recounts the haunting claims of the Lutz family in the Long Island, New York neighborhood of Amityville. As the book was challenged by lawsuits, the film adaptation made the story a notorious legend, stoking further debate about the accuracy of the Lutzs’ accounts.
The first installment spawned many sequels, but the entire series is now being revamped under the creative direction of multiple The Conjuring alumni. David F. Sanberg (Annabelle: Creation, Shazam!) is directing the new Amityville Horror movie, while Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing, the writing team behind the record-breaking The Conjuring: Last Rites, will pen the script.
The Amityville Horror remake is so far only described as a reimagination of the original movie. Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Sanberg is producing as well as directing, alongside The Safran Company’s Peter Safran and John Rickard. Lotta Losten is executive producing, as well as Natalia Safran, the latter also under The Safran Company’s banner.
Additionally, in July 2025, ᴅᴇᴀᴅline also reported that BoulderLight Pictures and Divide/Conquer were working on a new, disparate Amityville movie, to be directed by Joseph and Vanessa Winter.
What This Means For The Amityville Horror
The most recent movie in the franchise is 2024’s Amityville: Where The Echo Lives, which didn’t receive enough reviews for Rotten Tomatoes to aggregate a critics’ score and has a 1.5/10 rating on IMDb. The franchise also previously attempted to reset itself with 2005’s The Amityville Horror, starring Ryan Reynolds and Chloë Grace Moretz, among others – but was met with scathing critical reception.
As it currently stands, The Amityville Horror could potentially find its footing again under the direction of some talented filmmakers. What’s great about this new team, especially, is their experience with “true crime” haunting narratives, as The Conjuring is based on the allegedly true cases of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.
Our Take On The Amityville Horror’s Reboot
Amazon has recruited perhaps the best-equipped director and writers in the industry for this project, who will have the best chance of bringing Amityville back to mainstream success. However, any reboot may be in vain when so many creators have offered their take on the premise, and few since the original have been successful.
The upcoming Amityville movies might still find some kind of success, more likely on streaming, due to the notoriety of the story and audiences’ proven interest in this subgenre.
