The Conjuring: Last Rites Box Office Debut Breaks IT’s All-Time Horror Movie Record

The Conjuring: Last Rites‘ box office debut has broken the all-time record set by It in 2017. Directed by Michael Chaves, returning after The Devil Made Me Do It (2021), the fourth and final Conjuring film follows paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren as they take on one last case and confront mysterious supernatural forces, inspired by the real-life investigation of the Smurl haunting.

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return to lead The Conjuring: Last Rites cast as Ed and Lorraine Warren, alongside Mia Tomlinson taking over as their daughter, Judy, and Ben Hardy as her boyfriend. Rebecca Calder, Elliot Cowan, Kíla Lord Cᴀssidy, Beau Gadsdon, Molly Cartwright, Tilly Walker, Peter Wight, and Kate Fahy star as members of the Smurl family.

Per Warner Bros., The Conjuring: Last Rites debuted to $194 million worldwide, marking the biggest opening weekend of all time for a horror movie, breaking the record set by the studio’s own It, which debuted to $189.4 million in 2017.

It was reported yesterday that Last Rites had already become the highest-grossing horror debut ever internationally. Today’s totals show its international box office has reached $110 million. The domestic release also earned an additional $1 million, bringing its opening to $84 million.

On X, Jason Blum, the founder and CEO of Blumhouse Productions, shared a post congratulating The Conjuring: Last Rites for breaking the record:

What This Means For The Conjuring: Last Rites

With The Conjuring: Last Rites beating out It (2017) as the biggest opening weekend ever for a horror movie, it’s on track to become the highest-grossing horror movie of all time. It (2017) is the current record holder, unadjusted for inflation, grossing over $704.2 million at the box office, and was also the third-highest-grossing R-rated film at the time of its release in 2017.

With such a historic debut, The Conjuring: Last Rites is now positioned to challenge and potentially surpᴀss It‘s $704 million lifetime gross, cementing its place as the most successful horror film ever. Positive word of mouth, franchise loyalty, and strong global audience demand suggest its box office legs will be long, making the final chapter of The Conjuring saga a record-breaking farewell.

While The Conjuring: Last Rites has broken a major record with its debut, overtaking It (2017) at the starting gate, the real challenge lies ahead. To claim its тιтle as the highest-grossing horror movie of all time, it must sustain momentum beyond its opening weekend. Consistent box office dominance across multiple weekends will determine if The Conjuring: Last Rites can dethrone It‘s towering $704 million record.
