Rental Family Has A Fantastic Debut On Rotten Tomatoes

Following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Hikari’s Rental Family, starring Brendan Fraser, has received a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score upon its debut on the review aggregator site. The new comedy-drama follows a struggling actor in Tokyo who takes a job at a “rental family” agency, playing stand-in familial roles for clients.

In addition to Fraser, Rental Family stars Takehiro Hira and Mari Yamamoto, and is co-written by director Hikari and Stephen Blahut. Rental Family‘s trailer suggests that it will be a charming and quirky comedy about connection, which tugs on heartstrings in its more dramatic moments, thanks to the strong lead performances.

The project is off to a good start, as Rental Family currently has a perfect 100% critics’ approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, from 11 critics’ reviews, following TIFF. ScreenRant‘s Mae Abdulbaki reviewed Rental Family and called it “one of the year’s best dramas,” praising Fraser’s performance in “the most gentle, human film you’ll see all year.”

What This RT Score Means For Rental Family

Fraser could realistically be returning to the Oscars this year, though he may not be the winner again, given the other, very compeтιтive performances in the Lead Actor category. But Rental Family itself could stand out as a multi-nominee, when its genre is markedly different from many of the expected nominees in the period and even fantasy spaces.

Rental Family seems unlikely to sweep at the forthcoming Oscars, but it could carve out its own niche in this year’s awards season and cement its place in cinematic history. However, initial Rotten Tomatoes scores are susceptible to change, and Rental Family‘s fight to be recognized by the most prestigious awarding bodies in the film industry is just beginning.
