Sonic 4 Can Turn A Confusing Part Of Fan-Favorite Character’s Origin Into A Running Joke

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is finally going to introduce one of the most iconic and important characters from the Sonic games, Amy Rose. Amy first appeared in the 1993 video game Sonic CD, which also featured Metal Sonic. They both appeared during Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s post-credits scene, suggesting that Sonic 4 will be inspired by that game.

While Sonic 4 will definitely not follow Sonic CD‘s story to the letter, the franchise has shown that it is willing to pay more direct homage to the games these days than it used to. The original Sonic movie felt mostly disconnected from the source material, but Sonic 3 was fully adapted, albeit loosely, from the game Sonic Adventure 2.

Amy has been a solid fixture of the Sonic franchise for years now, appearing quite frequently in the games, TV shows, and comics. Yet, her initial introduction into the series was a little bit confusing. Now that so much time has pᴀssed since then, Sonic 4 has a great opportunity to call back to this confusion in a very fun way.

Sonic 4 Should Call Attention To Amy Rose’s Original Names In Sonic CD

Amy’s name, officially, has always been Amy Rose, but in the original game, there were two other names given to her that have since fallen out of use. In the original Japanese version of Sonic CD, the character was referred to as “Rosy the Rascal” the majority of the time, with only a few references to the name Amy Rose.

On top of that, the manual for the North American release of the game also referred to her as “Princess Sally,” though in the game she was still called Amy Rose. Both of these names came out of nowhere. After Sonic CD, they mostly disappeared from the franchise.

In the Sonic comics, the names “Rosy the Rascal” and “Princess Sally” were given to their own characters, referencing these original names for Amy.

Since Sonic CD was Amy’s game introduction, and Sonic 4 is going to be Amy’s true film introduction, calling back to these names would be a very fun way to allude to her history. It could also very easily be worked into some sort of running gag in the film, with characters constantly calling Amy by the wrong names, including these.

So far, the Sonic franchise has shown that it can handle callbacks with tact, giving the audience that is more familiar with Sonic the chance to notice small details that don’t make or break the movie. With Sonic the Hedgehog 4, the filmmakers have the chance to prove they can continue to do so with the new addition of Amy.
