With the DCU now underway following the release and success of Superman, the nascent franchise has the perfect opportunity to make up for the biggest missed opportunity in DC media with its Batman adaptation. When this occurs remains to be seen, as the DCU’s Batman adaptation has yet to publicize either a release date or any other pertinent information like plot or cast.
Discussions surrounding Batman in the DCU are currently centered on whether Robert Pattinson’s rendition of the Caped Crusader will be absorbed into the same franchise as David Corenswet’s Man of Tomorrow. If he isn’t, it remains likely that two versions of Batman will be occupying the silver screen within the same timeframe.
Either way, the DCU is under significant pressure to do the character justice. Batman is one of the most consistently well-cast characters in cinema, a trend the DCU would likely want to maintain. Thankfully, it’s already in a prime position to rectify one of the biggest Batman errors.
DCU’s Batman Movie Is Already Set To Provide Something Audiences Have Been Waiting 9 Years For
The DCU’s Batman will share a cinematic universe with the likes of Superman and Wonder Woman, a scenario which hasn’t been seen since the DCEU with Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne. Nevertheless, the only time “Batfleck” was seen on-screen was as part of another character’s movie, with 2023’s The Flash being the most recent.
This is unfortunate considering how well received Batfleck was by general audiences and Batman aficionados alike. 2017’s Justice League set up a possible DCEU Batman solo movie, only for an underwhelming performance to hamper its development.
Thankfully, things don’t look so bleak for the DCU and its rendition of Batman. Instead, Superman’s success heralds a prosperous franchise that Batman could head up, provided he is written and cast well enough. The DCU’s prospective direction further bolsters this possibility.
The DCU Is Already Setting Up The Brave & The Bold To Be The Biggest Batman Movie Yet
When DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn unveiled the plans for the DCU, he specified that Batman’s DCU debut would comprise a “father-son story” featuring Batman’s most rebellious sidekick, Damian Wayne’s Robin. This, alone, would make the DCU’s Batman more populous than recent renditions, especially as Gunn teased that the Bat-family would also play a significant role.
Superman demonstrated the DCU’s ability to spotlight multiple strong characters in a DC icon’s cinematic debut. Batman: The Brave and the Bold, therefore, is likely to follow in Superman‘s footsteps, highlighting an otherwise lesser-known character and bolstering the DCU’s Batman’s debut as a result.
Superman has also laid the groundwork for Batman to enter a much larger universe than he has previously been accustomed to. While Robert Pattinson’s Batman is iconic in his own right, the DCU‘s rendition will be bolstered by a roster of previously established heroes and villains, which will only help make the movie one of Batman’s most grandiose to date.
