Ahsoka Season 2 Will Improve On The First Season In One Exciting Way

Ahsoka season 2 promises to be better than the first season in one thrilling way. Written and directed by Dave Filoni, Ahsoka Tano’s co-creator, Ahsoka season 1 was a huge success for Star Wars. It featured key characters (and even moments) from the Clone Wars brought to live-action, and even delighted viewers with the return of Hayden Christensen’s Ahsoka Tano.

Ahsoka season 2 is currently filming in the U.K., scheduled for release sometime next year. We don’t know much about the story, beyond the fact the core cast are returning (with Rory McCann taking over from the late Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll). But there’s one further reason to be excited for the show…

Ahsoka Season 2 Is A Huge Step Forward For Dave Filoni

George Lucas’ protégé, Dave Filoni cut his teeth on animation; that meant Ahsoka season 1 was an incredible development in his career, the first show he had created in live-action. It took advantage of Disney’s “Volume” technology, innovative technology that allowed actors to perform against a mᴀssive, curved LED screen showing pH๏τorealistic backdrops.

Created by ILM, the Volume has had a transformative effect on Hollywood; it reduces the need for location filming. Unfortunately, it also has limitations; scenes sH๏τ in the Volume tend to require the same kind of composition, with the main characters grouped together in the foreground, and lighting can be tricky too.

The Volume is a great tool, but a harsh master. Fortunately, Ahsoka season 2 will be using a range of different filming techniques, including location sH๏τs. It should make for a second season that’s much more powerful and effective, and the location of Peridea – a mysterious extragalactic planet introduced in season 1 – should be much more compelling.

Dave Filoni Is Headed To The Big Screen

Dave Filoni may have started out on small-screen animations, but he’s headed to the big screen. This was confirmed at Star Wars Celebration 2023, when Lucasfilm revealed Filoni will helm an upcoming Star Wars movie expected to serve as the climax of The Mandalorian era.

If he’s going to make a great movie, then Filoni really does need to step away from the Volume and develop skills and experience when it comes to location shoots. That’s exactly what he’s getting with Ahsoka season 2; while this story will no doubt lead into the Filoni movie, the show is also important because it will allow him to evolve as a creator.

All this means Ahsoka season 2 will be both a stunning step forward after the first season, and also a necessary step towards the big screen.
