A billion-dollar Disney live-action remake is now surging on streaming. Disney originally became known for their classic animated features such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty. However, in recent years, there have been a number of Disney live-action remakes reimagining their animated classics.
While early examples include 1994’s The Jungle Book and 1996’s 101 Dalmatians, the current boom did not truly kick off until the 2010 release of Tim Burton’s billion-dollar hit Alice in Wonderland. Since then, many Disney classics have gotten the live-action treatment, including The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and more.
Lilo & Sтιтch Has Landed On A Major Streaming Chart
2025’s Lilo & Sтιтch has become an immediate streaming sensation. The movie, which was directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, is a live-action remake of the 2002 animated movie of the same name that follows orphaned Hawaiian girl Lilo (Maia Kealoha) bonding with a chaotic blue alien, Sтιтch (Chris Sanders), after he crash-lands on her island.
Lilo & Sтιтch was a smash hit in theaters, grossing $1.035 billion worldwide. Not only is it Hollywood’s first and so far only billion-dollar hit of 2025 (the only other billion-dollar movie to date is China’s Ne Zha II), it is Disney’s first billion-dollar live-action remake in six years, since the release of The Lion King ($1.657 billion) in 2019.
On the daily Top 10 chart of the most-watched movies on Disney+ in the United States, Lilo & Sтιтch sH๏τ to No. 1 on September 5, less than two full days after it first arrived on the platform on September 3 at 3:00 a.m. ET.
It has managed to top the chart in spite of compeтιтion from other high-performing contemporary тιтles including Marvel’s Thunderbolts* (No. 2) and Captain America: Brave New World (No. 5).
Additionally, Lilo & Sтιтch hit No. 1 on the daily Disney+ chart in more than four dozen other regions, including Ecuador, Mexico, Norway, and Sweden. In some regions, such as Australia, Germany, Greece, Iceland, New Zealand, and Italy, it hit No. 1 on September 4 and has maintained that position through September 5.
What This Means For Lilo & Sтιтch
This streaming success is just a cherry on top for the live-action remake. The reported budget of Lilo & Sтιтch is $100 million, which likely places its estimated break-even point somewhere around $250 million, a total that it more than quadrupled in theaters alone.
However, it seems possible that the movie could be a long-term streaming hit for Disney as well, if it can maintain its current momentum. This will push it toward even greater profitability, more than justifying the fact that the upcoming Lilo & Sтιтch 2 is already in development.
