Green Day has revealed the first trailer for New Year’s Rev, the upcoming spirited road trip film inspired by the band’s early years. New Year’s Rev is set to follow three teenagers (Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, and Ryan Foust) who embark upon a journey to Los Angeles, believing that they are opening for Green Day.
Among the up-and-coming stars of the coming-of-age musical flick is Mckenna Grace, who will appear in the new Colleen Hoover adaptation, Regretting You, very soon. However, the main event teased in the trailer is the appearance by Billie Joe Armstrong, Tré Cool, and Mike Dirnt, as the characters inevitably reach their concert destination.
When the movie was announced via Variety in February, Armstrong talked about the inspiration in a statement:
Van days rule. You will drive all night on no sleep then play a show for 10 kids in a basement of a friend of a friend’s house 50 miles east of anywhere you’ve ever heard of. But you’ll do it again the next day, and the one after that. Because you’re doing it with your bandmates who become your family and it’s unlike anything you’ve ever known. It’s electric. Let the music and mischief ensue.
New Year’s Rev, directed by Lee Kirk, was developed by Green Day alongside Live Nation Productions. The movie also stars The Office‘s Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, as well as Ignacio Diaz-Silverio, Keen Ruffalo, Fred Armisen, Bobby Lee, and Sean Gunn. New Year’s Rev will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12.

What This Means For New Year’s Rev
New Year’s Rev is opening at TIFF among all the Oscars-bound movies, and is unlikely to be any real compeтιтion for these projects. But it has still booked a prestigious premiere, bringing people a heartwarming comedy celebrating Green Day and the culture of being in and being a fan of a band, asking only that they understand the movie on its own terms.
The trailer showcases Thames and Grace, especially — who appear to end up having a romantic subplot — given that they are especially big rising stars following this summer and heading into some of their new releases. Thames is also set to play Grace’s love interest in Regretting You, which indicates that they were cast for strong chemistry, something else to look forward to.
Our Take On New Year’s Rev’s Teaser
Moreover, the buildup to the band’s concert scene in the teaser is especially well done, helping viewers understand the emotions and anticipation of the characters, fostering interest in this movie. The ideal demographic of New Year’s Rev is going to be Green Day fans, but it will only succeed if others can enjoy it as well.
And, from the looks of the trailer, New Year’s Rev effectively conveys the themes of pᴀssion for a particular type of music and pursuing a dream with no plan at all, making cherished memories along the way. This is a unique comedy due to Green Day’s involvement, which will allow it to best tell the story of the band and their fans.
