Lex Luthor’s power upgrade is more likely than ever now that the DCU’s first Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, has been announced. Superman‘s climax and aftermath leaves David Corenswet’s Man of Steel hopeful for the future after cleaning his name, while Lex Luthor is arrested for almost destroying Metropolis. However, Gunn’s Superman is just the start of Clark Kent and Lex Luthor’s feud.
On September 3, 2025, James Gunn, David Corenswet, and Nicholas Hoult shared three images of Superman and Lex Luthor with the caption, “Man of Tomorrow. In theaters July 9, 2027.” The DCU’s Man of Tomorrow is set to release almost exactly two years after Superman. While little else is known about the Superman sequel, there’s a villain detail that may already be hinted at.
James Gunn, David Corenswet, And Nicholas Hoult Have Teased Lex Luthor’s Warsuit
All three images shared by James Gunn, David Corenswet, and Nicholas Hoult depict Lex Luthor wearing his iconic green-and-purple Warsuit. The fact that all three images also feature Superman wearing his DCU movie suit suggests that they’re a first look at both character’s Man of Tomorrow wardrobe. David Corenswet’s Superman and Nicholas Hoult’s Luthor may actually fight each other in Man of Tomorrow.
Since each image is drawn by a different artist, Lex Luthor’s warsuit design changes drastically. At this point, James Gunn may be in the process of writing and brainstorming Man of Tomorrow‘s plot. Hence, the exact look of Lex Luthor’s costumes and weapons may take a while to be decided. Superman’s suit may also go through some changes once Gunn has finished the script.
Superman Perfectly Set Up Lex Luthor’s Power Upgrade
In Superman, Lex Luthor got scarily close to defeating Superman with help from the Engineer and through the remote-controlled Ultraman. By memorizing Superman’s combat, Luthor knew exactly how to overpower the Kryptonian. However, Ultraman, the Engineer, and Luthor’s soldiers lacked the primal hatred that Luthor feels for the Man of Steel.
Lex Luthor may be even more eager to destroy Superman with his own hands after his humiliating defeat. Once he finds a way to escape the legal repercussions of his crimes, Luthor may craft a plan to fight Superman without a middle man. Fortunately, Luthor’s perfect DCU warsuit already exists; the Hammer of Boravia’s suit is almost a one-to-one recreation of Luthor’s comic book armor.
As shown by Superman, Lex Luthor has been studying Kal El for a long time. Perfecting a suit of armor that puts him on par with a Kryptonian won’t be a tall task for Luthor. For his return in Man of Tomorrow, Lex Luthor may give the Hammer of Boravia armor a strength boost, a Kryptonite upgrade, and a green-and-purple makeover.
