Street Fighter Live-Action Movie Finally Secures New Release Date With Paramount Pictures

The live-action Street Fighter movie has set a release date. Directed by Kitao Sakurai, with a script written by Dalan Musson, the adaptation of the iconic video franchise follows estranged street fighters Ryu and Ken Masters as they are recruited by Chun-Li for the World Warrior Tournament, which involves a ᴅᴇᴀᴅly conspiracy that pits them against each other and their haunted pasts.

The Street Fighter movie features a mᴀssive ensemble cast that includes Noah Centineo as Ken Masters, Andrew Koji as Ryu, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, Roman Reigns as Akuma, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, Eric André as Don Sauvage, 50 Cent as Balrog, Jason Momoa as Blanka, Orville Peck as Vega, and Kyle Mooney as Marvin.

Now, Paramount has announced that the live-action Street Fighter movie will be released in theaters on October 16, 2026. This marks the first movie to debut under Legendary’s new worldwide distribution partnership with Paramount Pictures. The press release also confirms that the Street Fighter film is currently in production.

What This Means For The Street Fighter Movie

In April 2023, Sony and Legendary began developing a new Street Fighter movie with Danny and Michael Philippou, fresh off their successful debut, the A24 horror movie Talk to Me, signing on to direct. However, the duo eventually departed the project to focus on their next A24 horror film, Bring Her Back (2025).

However, despite the directors’ exit, Sony inexplicably set a March 20, 2026 release date for the new Street Fighter movie, setting up a box office battle with Project Hail Mary. Though the film found a new director in Kitao Sakurai in February 2025, it was wisely removed from Sony’s release calendar in March 2025.

Now, it seems the Street Fighter film has finally settled on the release date that it will stick to. Following a significant creative overhaul, the film is currently in production, and they should have plenty of time to finish filming, followed by post-production, before releasing in theaters on October 16, 2026.

It was certainly a puzzling decision when the Street Fighter movie set a March 20, 2026 release date despite not having a director, setting up a box office battle with Project Hail Mary. It seemed inevitable that it would be changed.

After Kitao Sakurai’s hiring as director and Legendary’s new global distribution deal with Paramount, the Street Fighter movie has been set for a more advantageous release on October 16, 2026. At least, in terms of its release date, Street Fighter is primed for success.
